Joy moved to Clear Lake, South Dakota where she waitressed to earn money for beauty school tuition. She then moved to Watertown at the age of 18. Joy graduated from Watertown Beauty Academy in 1952 and worked at Bea’s Beauty Shop for some time. Joy married Wilfred “Chuck” Kjetland on December 6, 1952 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. As a caring and maternal person Joy spent many years babysitting for others, while caring for her own family.

One of Joy’s proudest accomplishments was receiving her GED in the 1970s as she had to quit school after her mom died at a very early age.

Joy was a former member of the Grace Lutheran Church. She was very active and participated in numerous church activities. She taught Sunday school and enjoyed being a member of the Ladies Circle. She was also a member of the Watertown Christian Women’s Club for many years.

Joy had great pleasure and fulfillment from her devoted family. She was the essence of love as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Joy was an amazing cook, but also loved to eat out with her family and always looked forward to dessert. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing pinochle with her family, and hosting pinochle parties where she was happy to be a member of two card clubs.
