Obituary for Allen E. Kannas

Allen Kannas, age 80, of Castlewood, SD, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD with Pastor Paul Kuckhahn officiating. Julie Sulzle will be the organist with Lashawn & Adrian Smith as vocalists.

Visitation will be 4-6:00 pm, Monday, December 19, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Memorials may be designated to St. Martin’s Lutheran School, 1200 2nd St. NE Watertown, SD 57201.

Pallbearers will be Justin Kannas, Doug Kannas, Derek Kannas, Cole Kannas, Nathan Kannas and Kendra Kannas.

Allen Edward Kannas was born on August 7, 1942 in Watertown, South Dakota to Edward and Mabel (Erickson) Kannas. He attended School in Watertown. He was baptized and confirmed and a lifetime member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. He served on the church board and treasurer of the church endowment.

Allen and Noma Jane Groskreutz were married on May 12, 1962 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. That same year the couple moved to their farm near Castlewood. Allen and Noma raised their two boys, Kevin and Kyle on the farm. Allen served as President on the Castlewood School Board.

Survivors are Allen’s devoted wife, Noma of Castlewood, SD; his loving sons, Kevin (Lisa) Kannas of Hayti, SD and Kyle Kannas of Cedar Rapids, IA; five grandchildren, Cole (Sara) Kannas of Hayti, SD, Kendra Kannas of Hayti, SD, Amanda (spouse, John VandendolDer) Kannas of Minneapolis, MN, Andrew Kannas of Sioux Falls, SD and Nathan (Tara) Kannas of Cedar Rapids, IA; four great-grandchildren, Cash, Cora and Colter Kannas and Isabella Kannas; his sister, Arlys Nisich of Watertown, SD; his two brothers, Wayne Kannas of Watertown, SD and Charles (Carleen) Kannas of Watertown, SD; brother-in-law, Maynard (Dona) Groskreutz; and sisters-in-law, Anotta Britzman and Velma Clark; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mabel Kannas; his sister-in-law, Deb Kannas; his brothers-in-law, Jerry Clark and Buzz Nisich; and his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Levka Ostlund.
