Obituary for Anke Beate Leadabrand

Anke Beate Leadabrand, age 81, of Watertown, SD, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at Avantara in Watertown.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service, Friday, December 20, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Watertown with Pastor Elmer Brinkman officiating.

Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Honorary pallbearers will be Oliver Birchwood-Glover, Marc Leadabrand, Aric Leadabrand, Dirk Leadabrand, Meghan Leadabrand, Matthew Leadabrand, Sarah Leadabrand, Jeremiah Leadabrand, Katie Leadabrand, Sam Birchwood-Glover, Bill Curtis and Ace Hall.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Wight, Jim Leadabrand, Jack Leadabrand, Charlie Larkin, Kelly Matteson, Mark Mandry and Dale Donovan.

Anke Beate (Ritter) Leadabrand was born October 10, 1938 in Berlin, Germany to Fritz and Lucie Emma (Crucius) Ritter. She was educated in Oberschuelle; and she also earned her Doctorate of Religious Studies. Anke married Jerry A. Leadabrand on January 5, 1963 and to this union five sons were born, Oliver, Marc, Aric, Dirk, and John.

Anke served for over 20 years alongside Jerry in the US Army as a dedicated spouse who was very active in every community she was in. She was the first person to receive the Armed Forces Community Service Award presented by the Commanding General of the 3rd Infantry Division in 1982.

Anke served as a Board Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America and saw two of her sons through the rank of Eagle Scout. She served as a Personnel Officer for Miller and Paine in Lincoln, Nebraska and she also served as the Director of Personnel at Stride Right Shoe Corporation in Fulton, Missouri.

Anke was a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and a life member of Eastern Star. She was a life member of the United Methodist Church. In her semi-retirement she was the pastor of a nursing home in Durango, Colorado.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her husband, LTC, Dr. Jerry A. Leadabrand, Ed D, US Army (ret.); her son, Oliver Birchwood-Glover and Thomas Glover and their son, Samuel, her son, Marc and Dr. Cathy Leadabrand and their children, Matthew and Meghan, her son, Aric Leadabrand, Angie Leadabrand and their children, Sarah, Jeremiah and Kathleen, and her son, Dirk Leadabrand.

She was preceded in death by her son, John Mathew.
