Obituary for Arnold James Anderson

Arnold J. Anderson, 89, of Watertown, a former longtime rural Hayti, SD resident, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Jenkins Living Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 26, 2019 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Father Richard Fox officiating. Music will be furnished by Cindy Grantham as soloist accompanied by Steph Sauder.

Visitation will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Sunday, August 25th at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Grover, SD.

The family requests that memorials be given in Arnold's memory to St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Arnold's granddaughters: Gail Kangas, Brenda Johnson, Josie Beld, Alexandria Anderson, Shannon Struckman, Becky Webb, Heidi Schleis, Saylor Hlavacek and Justine Anderson.

Active Pallbearers will be Arnold's grandsons: Jason Anderson, Austin Anderson, Michael Anderson, Wesley Johnson, Jeremiah Peckenpaugh, Tanner Moss, Riley Buck and Brady Buck.

Arnold James Anderson was born on May 20, 1930 to John and Julia (Forness) Anderson in rural Hayti, SD. He grew up on the family farm west of Hayti and attended Opdahl #1 School. On October 20, 1951, Arnold married Donna L. Namken at the St. Frances DeSales Church in Estelline. Seven children were born to this union. Arnold farmed west of Hayti for 51 years. He then drove truck for the Hayti and Castlewood Elevators for 15 years. Arnold and Donna moved to Watertown in 2009.

He served on the Opdahl Township Board and was a hospice volunteer. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, playing cards and Bingo. In his younger years, Arnold enjoyed square dancing.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Arline (Leon) Johnson of Bryant, Gary (Serena) Anderson of Beresford, James (Diane) Anderson of Hayti, Mary Ellen Johnson (Bob Sour) of Hazel, Kimberly (Curtis) Hlavacek of Watertown, MarJoan (Bret) Buck of Bryant and Lynn Anderson of Hayti; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; his nieces, Carolyn (Kent) Hongslo and Shirley (Brad) Kleinhans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Julet and Russell Johnson; and infant granddaughter, Teresa Anderson.
