Obituary for Bernt "Bennie" Larson
Bernt "Bennie" Larson, 86 of Strandburg, SD, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, SD with Reverend Elmer Brinkman officiating. Kathy Granquist will be the organist.
To allow for social distancing, Bennie's funeral services will also be transmitted to church parking area via 88.7 FM radio.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2020 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Burial will be in the Goodwin Cemetery with Military Honors.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Theodore Larson, Michael and Hannah Cutshaw and Bennie's lifelong friends.
Active Pallbearers will be Erin and Faithe Larson, Dylan, Cody, Marshall and Luke Christensen, Gabriel and Rachael Cutshaw.
Bernt "Bennie" Theodore Larson, son of John and Lila (Johnson) Larson was born on June 27, 1934 in Clear Lake, SD. He grew up in the Goodwin/Strandburg area and graduated from Goodwin High School in 1951.
He enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard. He was activated and served on regular duty in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis until his honorable discharge in 1964.
Bennie was united in marriage to Shirley Ebens on June 3, 1964 at the Milbank Hospital. The couple lived on a farm near Strandburg where Bennie farmed all his life. Together they raised three children, Richard, Lynnette and Leslie.
Being a lifelong farmer, he spent many long hours in his tractor. His radio was always on, tuned into country western music, basketball games or a local church service. He enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, pitching fastpitch softball and bowling with his Goodwin friends. He had a passion for hunting, woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends. Bennie served for 20 years on the HD Electric Board of Directors, was a member of American Legion Post 171 Stockholm/ Strandburg and a lifelong member of Tabor Lutheran Church.
Bennie is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Richard (Val) Larson of Dell Rapids, SD, Lynnette (Bryan) Christensen of Alcester, SD, and Leslie (Roger) Cutshaw of Clear Lake, SD; his 11 grandchildren, Erin, Faithe and Theodore Larson, Dylan, Cody, Marshall and Luke Christensen, Gabriel, Michael, Rachael and Hannah Cutshaw; 2 great-grandchildren, Kiara and Bailey Christensen; one brother, John Larson; his niece, Brenda (Bruce) Olson and his nephew, Tim (Linda) Larson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lila Larson; brother, Lyle and two infant brothers, Roger William and Lowell.
