William Albert Hoff was born to William "Nick" and Clara Mae (Johnson) Hoff on May 19, 1935 in Deuel County. He grew up in Deuel County and attended Prairie Queen Country School near Clear Lake until the seventh grade. He graduated from Goodwin High School in 1953. Bill served with the South Dakota Army National Guard for a short time.

On May 25, 1963 he married Janet Painter at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg. Five children were born to this union, Bill, Kathy, David, Chris and Rick. Janet Hoff passed away on January 30, 1986.

Bill married Alice Koehn on September 3, 1988 in Watertown. Joining the family were Alice's children, Laurie, Deb, Peggy, Bob, Bonnie, and Rich. Bill worked as a mechanic most of his adult life. He worked for 18 years at McLaughlin Sand and gravel and also worked at Cenex and Angus. He finally retired from the county at the ripe old age of 81.

Bill loved gardening, tinkering on equipment and woodworking. Bill enjoyed spending time with his wife Alice, his family and Sadie, his faithful dog.

He left behind an amazing collection of stuff to his wife and children, who have no idea what to do with it!

Bill was known for his iron grip, fierce handshake, and a large smile with a twinkle in his eye.
The way he died was just like the way he lived; strong and stubborn. He never stopped fighting.

Bill was a member of the Northeast Shrine Club in Watertown.

Bill is survived by his wife, Alice; his children, Bill (Jenny) Hoff of Plankington, Kathy (Brian) Schooley, David Hoff, Chris (Don) Barse and Rick Hoff (Moriah Laidlaw) all of Watertown; Alice's children, Laurie Koehn, Deb (Tom) Stanley, Peggy (Mike) Hulscher, Bob (Jane) Koehn, Bonnie (Steve) Molengraaf, and Rich (Lori) Koehn all of Watertown; 28 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Janette Cook of Watertown, Darlene (Doug) Stohr of Clear Lake, and Anita (Tom) Kranz of Goodwin; a brother-in-law, Richard Heyn of Watertown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Janet Hoff; and three sisters, Louise Reichling, Judith Bachman and Lois Heyn.
