Carol (Hartman) Zillgitt, age 68, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022 surrounded by her family
Funeral service will be 3:00 pm, Friday, April 1, 2022 at First United Methodist Church in Watertown with Reverend Jen Tyler officiating.
Interment will be at a later date.
VISITATION will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown where the family will greet friends
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Kelly Zillgitt "Live for Others" Scholarship at Lake Area Technical College in Watertown.
Carol was born in Omaha, NE as the 3rd sibling of 9. She moved to Wentworth, South Dakota at a young age and graduated from Chester High School in 1971. Soon after, she married Tom Van Liere and had three children Jessica, Rachael (her favorite), and Jason. They later divorced in 1983.
She married Kelly Zillgitt in 1986 and moved to Watertown, SD the same year. Kelly was a Diesel Instructor at Lake Area Technical College and Carol spent her years in Watertown working mostly in radio advertising, a job that she loved. Her husband, Kelly passed away after a battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2012. She retired in 2018 from KXLG radio.
After retirement, Carol continued to run her rental properties around Watertown.
She spent her free time attending many activities and events for her grandkids, visiting friends, and traveling to various destinations. She loved being social and active, attending many concerts and local events.
She was a member of the Watertown Community Recreation center and joined a sorority in Watertown where she connected with and made many close friends. She met her boyfriend, Steve Slater in 2019. They shared many interests and love for the outdoors and adventure.
Carol was adored by family and friends for being a tiny person with a big personality. You would always find her with a big smile on her face walking really fast and laughing infectiously.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children; Jessica (Corey) Stonefield of Missoula, MT; Rachael (Tom) Crank of Groton, SD and Jason (Candice) Van Liere of Sioux Falls, SD; Grandchildren Isaac and Nolan Stonefield, Mia, Avery and Samuel Crank and Vayda and John Van Liere; loving boyfriend, Steve Slater of Dennison, IA; sisters Janet (Judd) Ball of Pierre, SD and Anita (Kevin) Ailts of Brookings, SD; brothers, James (Bonnie) Hartman, Jr. of Nunda, SD; John (Sherri) Hartman of Brookings, SD; Jeff (Trudi) Hartman of Brookings, SD; Michael Hartman of Dell Rapids, SD; and Thomas (Sharon) Hartman of Jacksonville, NC and many dear relatives and friends.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Zillgitt; parents, James and Dolly Hartman; and sister, Cecelia Hartman Iverson.
