Obituary for Carroll Dean Chandler

Carroll D. Chandler, 87, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2021, at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., with visitation for one hour prior to the services on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown. Pastor Paul Janke will officiate.

The family requests masks be worn.

Carroll's services will be recorded and added to his obituary page when available.

Memorials may be designated to St. Martin's Elementary School.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by the South Dakota Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team.

Pallbearers will be Cliff Chandler, Andrew and Eric Gerberding, Jeff and Jerrold Chandler and Tom Peterson.

Carroll Dean Chandler, was born on June 2, 1933, in Watertown, SD to Clifford and Irene (McAndrew) Chandler. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Martin's Lutheran Church. He attended country school at Appleby #66 through eighth grade and graduated from Watertown High School in 1951. Following his graduation, Carroll joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in Watertown. On March 3, 1954 he was united in marriage to his high school girlfriend, Margaret Czech. There were four children born to this union, Greg, Robbin, Timothy and Pamela.

Carroll worked in Watertown until he was drafted into the United States Army in May of 1955. He was stationed for basic training in Colorado Springs, CO and was then sent to Germany for 18 months. Upon returning to Watertown in September of 1957, Carroll began farming on his own. He worked for a farmer for eight years in the Grover area. In 1968, Carroll and Margaret purchased a farm four miles south of Watertown on the Foley Road. It became a grade A dairy farm. Carroll was a farmer since he was a young boy and farmed all his life. It was in his blood. He retired from farming in 1995 and then worked for 20 years at Cashway Farm Center, Worthington Ag and Runnings.

Carroll was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church. He served on the Grover School board and was a member of the Watertown Milk Producers Association. He enjoyed going for rides to check the crops, going to threshing shows and auction sales. He also enjoyed John Deere tractors, building sheds, feed bunks, repurposing antique treasures, collecting mopeds and fixing them up to sell.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Margaret; their children, Gregory (Denise) Chandler of Watertown, SD, Robbin (Jerald) Gerberding of Castlewood, SD, and Tim (Christine) Chandler of Florence, SD; his grandchildren, Katie and Cliff Chandler, Andrew (Becky) and Eric Gerberding, and Heidi (Kevin) Turner; his great-grandchildren, Maxwell Chandler, Lauren and Bennett Gerberding; his step great-grandchildren, Katie, Abby, Lydia Kooima, and baby boy Gerberding on the way; his siblings, Ormelle Hedblad and Audrey Pearson of Minneapolis, MN, and Elois Redlin of Clear Lake, SD; a sister-in-law, Rosanne Chandler of Watertown, SD; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Irene Chandler; his brother, Richard Chandler; his daughter, Pam Brandsrud;​ and one granddaughter, Sarah Brandsrud.
