Obituary for Darwin Gerhard Giese

Darwin Giese, age 83, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022 in Watertown.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, September 12, 2022 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown with Pastor Paul Kuckhahn officiating.

Visitation will be from 2-5 pm, Sunday, September 11, 2022 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown, and on Monday prior to the services at the church.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Pallbearers will be Trent Theye, Dexter Kolb, Terry Reilly, Mike Nichols, Tom Nichols and Justin Brandriet.

Darwin Gerhard Giese, son of Gerhard and Minnie (Beskow) Giese was born on July 19, 1939 in Watertown, SD. He grew up in rural Watertown, 18 miles north of highway 81. He attended Mazeppa Township country school. At the age of 16, Darwin went to Lutheran Academy in Mobridge.

In March of 1958 he married Lois Jean Mahlen of Webster, SD. One son, Danny was born to this union. Darwin farmed for many years and bought and hauled cattle. He worked as a buyer at the Sioux Falls Stockyards. He went to Webster where he was a cattle buyer, then to Aberdeen and worked for Gerald Braun Trucking as a dispatcher and also managed the sale barn in Aberdeen. Darwin and Lois moved to Watertown and he bought hogs for Swift & Co. before going to work for John Morrell, retiring from there in 2000. Lois Mahlen Giese passed away in November of 2007.

On June 12, 2009 Darwin married Janice Strege Barrett, an old childhood acquaintance, and they enjoyed their time together immensely, dining out and visiting family. Janice Barrett Giese passed away in January of 2015. Darwin worked for Marlyn Taecker and Doug Brandriet farming until 2019. He then became a courtesy driver at Watertown Ford where he worked up until about a month before his death.
Darwin is survived by his son, Danny (Vickie) Giese of Watertown; his sister, Vonnie (Mike) Reilly of Watertown; one step-granddaughter, Chandler Rydberg (Jade Dailey); and many nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gerhard and Minnie Giese, his sister Darlene Kolb, his brother Donald Giese, his first wife Lois Mahlen Giese, a stillborn daughter, and his second wife Janice Barrett Giese.
