Obituary for David Edward Hanten

David E. Hanten, age 60, of Watertown, formerly of Goodwin, SD, passed away Friday, October 8, 2021 from multiple myeloma cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 18, 2021 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown with Father Richard Fox and Father Denis Meier officiating. Music will be furnished by the Immaculate Conception Church Funeral Choir accompanied by Mary Fox.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m., with a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17th, at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by the Peden-Cole Post 109 of the American Legion in Gary, SD, Patriot Guard Riders in Watertown, SD, and the South Dakota Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team.

Pallbearers will be Joe Hauck, Rick Brownell, Greg Moeller, Matthew Hupf, Red Anderson, and Carey Holt.

David Edward Hanten was born on November 28, 1960 to Herbert and Betty (Grygiel) Hanten in Watertown, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm south of Watertown where they farmed and sold vegetables and other farm products. David attended the Immaculate Conception School through the sixth grade and then attended Watertown public schools, graduating in 1979.

He joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in January of 1979 from which he retired 24 years later as a Sergeant First Class. David was united in marriage on May 2, 1987 to Twila Blum and two children, Charles and Lynne were born to this union. He had been employed at Terex for 40 years until his death.

David loved motorcycle riding and also had a passion for stock car racing. He and his son Charles built a B-mod and raced the last few years with the help of his longtime friend Red Anderson, however David was unable to race on a regular basis due to his health.

David was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was also a member of the Peden-Cole Post 109 of the American Legion in Gary, SD for 23 years, serving as Commander, Bar board, and in several other offices as well as serving suppers at the 109 on numerous occasions. He was a motorcycle safety instructor for the State of South Dakota for 22 years with his friends and fellow instructors, Ed Fawcett and Greg Moeller. He was joined by his son Charles as an instructor for the past several years.

David is survived by his wife Twila, his children, Charles Hanten and Lynne (John) Marcus, his grandson, Colby Hanten, his mother Betty Hanten, one brother Michael (Patty) Hanten, a sister-in-law Patti Hanten, and his nephews Christopher and Ryan Hanten.

He was preceded in death by his father Herbert Hanten, his brother John Hanten, and his parents-in-law Charles and Dorothy Blum.
