Obituary for Dean Alan Johnson

Dean Alan Johnson, age 60 of Bristol, SD passed away peacefully Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD, after an eight year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Dean was born January 10, 1961 in Watertown, SD, the fourth child of Donald and Dolores (Long) Johnson. He graduated from Summit High School, class of 1979, where he excelled at football and was awarded MVP for the team in 1978. He married Bernetta Hupf and was later divorced. Dean worked various jobs including construction of Interstate 29 and would brag about stepping off the miles of the interstate from Summit to Watertown, trucking across the country, working the manufacturing line at Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative Sugarbeet Plant in Wahpeton, ND. He was manager of NAPA in Williston, ND during the oil rush until his health forced him into early retirement.

Dean was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed playing a good game of cards, and was a loyal Vikings fan.

He was preceded in death by his father Donald Johnson, his significant other Deborah Mountford, and grandson Madison Swearingen.

Survivors include his mother, Dolores Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Danny (Linda) Johnson of Harrisburg, SD; sisters, DeLaine (Terry) Rasmussen of Sisseton SD, and Dixie (Greg) Murphy of Fairmont, MN; daughters, April (Christopher) Thompson of Watertown, SD, Amanda (Dustin) Baxter of Graceville, MN, and Crystal (David) Vrieze of West Valley City, UT; 6 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD. The family extends an invitation for a light lunch and time to visit following the service.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
