Obituary for Della Jane Wein Butcher

Della Wein Butcher, age 91, of Watertown, SD passed away on May 4, 2022.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2022 at First United Methodist Church in Watertown. Pastor Abigail Ozanne will officiate with Blair Titze as organist. Refreshments will follow in the church hall immediately after Della's services.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Della’s great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Della’s grandchildren.

Della Jane Ratliff was born October 18, 1930 in Clark, South Dakota to John A and Erma V. (Stanley) Ratliff. She grew up on a farm near Carpenter, South Dakota, attended country school, and in 1948 she graduated from Clark High School. After graduation she moved to Clark and worked at Clark County National Bank for two years.

Della married Gail Henry Wein on June 1, 1950 at the Methodist Church in Carpenter and the couple moved to Watertown, South Dakota. To this union four children were born, Jerry, Dale, Kevin and David, an infant son who passed away at birth. Through the years Della worked as a bookkeeper and was employed at Montgomery Wards, Davey Furniture Company, Watertown Employee Federal Credit Union and Pollard International.

Gail passed away in 1989 and Della remarried Don Butcher in 1994. Don passed away in 2003.

Della was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Esther Circle, she taught Sunday school, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Watertown.

Della loved spending time with her children and their families and was a devoted mom and grandma. She also enjoyed traveling, bus tours, cruises, and volunteer work at Prairie Lakes Hospital and Jenkins Living Center.

Della is survived by her sons, Jerry (Darla) Wein of Monticello, MN, Dale (Susan) Wein of Aberdeen, SD and Kevin (Darcie) Wein of Thornton, CO; stepchildren, John (Jackie) Butcher of Mosinee, WI, and Viola Peterson of Mission, TX; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, David; her two husbands; brother, Dean Ratliff; and sister, Clara Butcher.
