Obituary for Donald F. "Don" Maag

Donald F. Maag, age 91 of Florence, SD, passed away Sunday, December 26th, 2021 at the Avantara Milbank Care Center.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 30th from 5 to 7 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm at Wight and Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 am Friday, December 31st at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Florence. A rosary led by Fr. Daniel Smith will begin at 10 am. Music will be by Carolyn Maag and Leanne Maag.

Pallbearers will be Jamie and Scott Maag, Matthew and Marcus Crooks, Mike Engelhart and Jared Tschakert.

Internment will be at Esterly Cemetery near Florence with military honors by SD Army National Guard Honors and Codington County American Legion Post 17.

Donald Frederick Maag was born August 5th, 1930 to Edward and Selma (Becking) Maag. He grew up on the family farm near Florence and attended Florence School. Don worked hard on the family farm next to his brothers and his father.

Don was drafted into the Korean war where he served proudly for almost 2 years with the most significant service being with the 72nd Combat Engineer Company. During his service he achieved the Korean Service Metal, Good Conduct Metal, United Nations Service Metal and National Defense Service Metal. Don was honorably discharged November 28th, 1953.

Upon returning to Florence, Don married his lifelong soulmate, Delores (Stahlke) Maag June 8th, 1955 at the Blessed Sacrament Church of Florence. Don and Delores together built a family of seven children, farming and dancing for over 60 years. Don was an active member in the Blessed Sacrament Church, even teaching CCD alongside Delores. Don cared for Delores for many years as she battled Alzheimer's. Delores passed away March 14, 2020. Don has missed her dearly and they are finally reunited dancing for eternity. Except for the Polka, Dee always said he couldn't Polka.

Don is survived by seven children, Randy Maag (Nancy Nicholls) of Watertown, SD, Marianne and Bill Crooks of Ft. Collins, CO, Patrick Maag of Watertown, SD, Mark and Laurie Maag of Florence, SD, David Maag of Wallace, SD, Gerald Maag of Watertown, SD and Jeanne and Ken Wolfe of Marion, SD. Siblings, Vince (Mary) Maag of Sioux Falls, Jerry (Lynn) Maag of Crosby MN, and Kim Maag of Florence. Sisters-in-law, MaryAnn Stahlke of Watertown, SD and Judy Maag of Florence, SD.

Donald will be missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Scott Maag, his children Scott Jr. and Brooklyn; Kelsey Maag (Ryan Boehm), their children Nathan & Audrina; Jill & Tyler Soulek, their children Olivia and Everly; Matthew & Mette Crooks, their children Naomi & Jacob; Marcus Crooks, Lacey Maag, Heather & Garett Schimmel with their son Grady; Jamie Maag with his children Lauren & Lincoln; Melissa & Jared Tschakert with their children Kyra & Jackson; Ashley & Mike Engelhart with their children Colby & Aspen; Joe Maag, Ethan Maag, Regan & Drew Verdouw with their daughter Emery and Bethanie Maag with her son Tucker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin infant siblings, a son, Joseph E. Maag; one daughter-in-law, JoAnn Williams; great-granddaughter, Kendra Boehm. Siblings (and their spouses) Les, Darrell and Vic Maag, Alice and Duane Breuer, Evonne and Joe Lesnar, Pat and Larry Sumner.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Avantara Milbank who took wonderful care of our dad. No words can explain our gratitude for the kindness, patience and respect always given to him and our family.
