Doris M. McFarlane, 83, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Jenkins Living Center.

Private Family Services were held on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Doris (Dorie) Mae McFarlane was born on September 2, 1937, to John and Zella (Fehl) Crooks in Sisseton, SD. She grew up on a farm near Peever, SD and attended rural grade school then moved into Wilmot with her sister and graduated from Wilmot High School in 1955.

On October 9, 1955, she married Maurice (Mac) McFarlane. The couple lived in Wilmot for three years then moved to Watertown. They had four children. After her youngest started school, she worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken for many years as the “day” girl. In 1983, she opened a used bookstore, The Bookbag. She loved books and wrote a column about books, Book News, published in the Coteau Shopper for several years. She had a wonderful sense of humor and everyone will remember her laughing. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Watertown and the Codington County Post 17 American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at Prairie Lakes Hospital for years. Doris enjoyed reading, writing poetry and stories, growing beautiful flowers (especially Orchids, irises and African Violets), singing, dancing and spending time with family and friends. Jenkins Living Center has been her home the past few years and the staff became like family. She was always willing to yodel upon request.

Doris will always be remembered for her smile, sense of humor, spunk, laughter, acceptance of others, and kindness.

Doris will be greatly missed by her four children: Jim (Karen) McFarlane of Deadwood, SD; Marie (Robert) Williams of Sioux Falls, SD; Laurie (Joe) Bauer of Mobridge, SD; and Marty (Michelle) McFarlane of Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren: John (Danielle) McFarlane, Adam (Jackie) McFarlane, Jenna McFarlane, Jared Bauer, Emily (Skyler) Frederick, Ashley McFarlane (Lucy Roberts), Falon McFarlane, and Cole (Kaylee) McFarlane; four step-grandchildren: Mark Williams, Mark (Maria) Engelhardt, Chrystal (Dustin) Styles and Tim (Michaela) Engelhardt; five great-grandchildren: Kimber and Colter McFarlane, Kenlee and Kasen McFarlane, and Joey Frederick; and nine step-great-grandchildren; her sister: Mavis Doschadis of Wilmot, SD; her brother, Bob Crooks of Watertown, SD; sisters-in-law: Doris Christianson of Wilmot, SD and Evelyn (Donald) Reynen of Mitchell, SD and many nieces and nephews, especially Karen Reil and Cindy Thomas.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; her siblings, Max Crooks and Maxine Pew; brothers-in-law: Arnold McFarlane, Lloyd Christianson, Eugene Pew, Bob Doschadis; and sisters-in-law: Muriel McFarlane, Josie Crooks and Rose Crooks.
