Dorothy Mae Coy was born August 28, 1924 to Frank and Kathryn (Kerger) Coy in rural Arlington, SD, the fifth of seven children. Time spent with family and friends was always important to Dorothy.

After attending school in Arlington, Dorothy went to work as a waitress in her Aunt Betty's cafe in Woolsey SD and met a handsome dishwasher named Bill Carter.

On May 14, 1945 Dorothy Mae Coy was united in marriage to William Ray Carter in De Smet South Dakota. They lived on farms and at the Watertown Air Base in the 1940's, and then settled in Watertown to raise their five children.

Bill was employed at Swift & Company and Dorothy worked at Spies Super Value for many years. She was proud of her efforts to help start an employee union at Spies.

Dorothy enjoyed sewing and knitting, often making outfits for her kids and grandkids. She loved flowers, dancing and music. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and traveling.
She was an AVON representative for several years and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church.

Dorothy liked people and they liked her in return. A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Jenkins living Center, where Dorothy spent her last years.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Kathryn (Tom) Reed, Sandwich Ill, Rod (Jackie) Carter, Gering NE, Rich Carter of Rapid City, SD & Linda Carter (Ken Mills) of Minneapolis, MN.

Five Grandchildren: Michelle (Don) Larson Yorkville, ILL, Jill (Darian) Eliassen Parker, CO, Matt (Erin) Reed of Manteno, ILL, Jessi (Brian) Albers, Parker, CO, Kristin Reed of Bensenville, ILL.

Six great grandchildren: Dane & Brooke Eliasson, Jacob & Ben Larson, Carter and Tucker Albers. Many beloved nieces and nephews who never forgot Aunt Dorothy and loved her resilient spirit.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Bill Carter, her oldest son Gary Carter, brothers Don, Roland, Dar, Dale and sisters Doris and Donna.
