Obituary for Doug Lukonen

Douglas "Doug" D. Lukonen of Watertown, SD passed away peacefully, with Nancy by his side, at the age of 62 on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Doug courageously fought a 17 year battle with cancer. He remained very positive and very strong. He was always asking the doctors what they could try next.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 4-8 pm, scripture service will be held at 7 pm, with a time of sharing to follow at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 am, Friday, January 20, 2023 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown with Father Richard Fox and Father Paul Rutten as con-celebrants. Music will be provided by the Immaculate Conception Funeral Choir accompanied by Mary Fox.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Pallbearers will be Todd Roth, John Schulte, Dave Hurkes, Kevin Raap, Rod Borkhuis and Richard Wipf.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Doug's Snap-on Family and friends.

Douglas Dean Lukonen, son of Kenneth and Arlene (Dally) Lukonen was born on September 27, 1960 in Watertown, SD. He attended school in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in 1978.
On August 11, 1990 he married Nancy Kling in Lemmon, SD. Doug owned and operated Lukes Car Care for a couple of years. He was also employed at Telelect for a short time. He worked as a claims adjuster for De Smet Farm Mutual for five years and then was a Snap-on Dealer for 24 years, retiring in 2022.

Doug cherished 14 years of family summer trips with his mom, in-laws, wife and kids.
He loved race track food, Bud Light, frozen pizza and all beef hot dogs.

Doug loved snowmobiling, dirt track racing, restoring cars, old gas pumps and old jukeboxes. He loved hunting at his favorite getaway, the ranch in Lemmon. Thanks to Snap-on, there were many trips taken and enjoyed.

Doug enjoyed helping others and played the role of counselor, teacher and friend. Doug's lawn was his pride and joy. He was also honored to be the King at the CCC 2nd Chance Prom.

Grateful for having shared his life are Nancy, his wife of 32 years; his children, Grant (Baylee) Lukonen of Watertown, and Holly (Christopher) Brown of Fruitdale, SD; his mother, Arlene Lukonen of Watertown; his siblings, Debbie Lukonen (Jon Dagel), Marty (Renee) Lukonen, Keith (RaVonne) Lukonen and Patty (Gary) Veeder of Watertown; two grandchildren, Ridge and Mara; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Kenny, his in-laws Katie and Bernie, and twin infant grandkids.
