Obituary for Ethel E. DeWald

Ethel E. DeWald, (widow of Clive) age 99 of Watertown, passed away March 30, 2023.

A Celebration of Ethel's Life will be held at 1:00 pm, with visitation one hour prior, on Monday, July 3, 2023 at First United Methodist Church in Watertown.

Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Honorary pall bearers will be the grandchildren.


ETHEL EMMA STANLEY DEWALD

Ethel Emma Stanley was born August 24, 1923 to Lewis and Isabel Stanley in Oto, Iowa. She graduated from high school in Primghar, Iowa in 1941 and married Clive DeWald at his parents’ farm home in Valley Springs, South Dakota on August 26, 1941. They moved to Los Angeles, California where she worked at Clive’s father’s gas station while Clive served overseas during World War II and remained there for six years. In 1947 they moved back to South Dakota living in Parker, Brookings and finally Watertown in 1960.

She was librarian at Mellette Elementary School for one year. She was an adult literacy instructor. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and in Eastern Star for many years. She was a volunteer at Prairie Lakes Hospital. She enjoyed her e-mail connections with her children and friends, playing cards and working in the church. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ethel is survived by son Ed (Judy) DeWald of Wilsonville, Oregon, Jerry (Judie) DeWald, Cheri’ (Bruce) Erlandson, Yvonne (Ken) Nigg all of Watertown, South Dakota and Earl “Val” (Becky Johnson) DeWald of Redmond, Washington. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clive, great granddaughter Braelynn Erlandson, sisters Herberta Olhausen, Irene Williamson, Pearl Lemkuil and Bea Powers.
