Obituary for Fern L. Mortenson
Fern L. Mortenson, 100, of Milbank, SD, formerly of Watertown, SD, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2020 at St. William's Care Center in Milbank.
A Private Family Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel.
Private Family Services will be on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Reverend Marion H. Paulis officiating.
Interment will be at a later date at the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake, SD.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fern L. Mortenson was born to Michael and Bertha (Henrichson) Fischer on August 26, 1920 in Clear Lake, SD. She grew up in the Altamont/Clear Lake, SD and attended school at Clear Lake.
On June 17, 1939 Fern married Cecil Drake in Clear Lake. The couple farmed west of Tunerville until 1960. Fern and Cecil ran the Tunerville station and cafe until 1973 when they moved to Hayti, SD. Cecil passed away in 1974, and Fern returned to run Tunerville again.
In 1979, Fern married Cloyd Mortenson and they moved to Marietta, MN. Fern worked in the Madison Nursing Home in Madison, MN at the age of 60 for 12 years as a CNA. She moved to Watertown in 1993 where she retired. Fern moved to Milbank, SD in 2013 where she resided until her death.
Fern is survived by her children, David (Sylvia) Drake of Watertown, SD, Carol (Norm) Kelly of Hartland, WI, Linda Lindner of Milbank, SD, Sylvia (Charles) Musch of Big Stone, SD, and Ellen Botts of Sioux Falls, SD; 22 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and too many great-great grandchildren to count.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, her first husband Cecil, one son James Drake, two daughters Lillian and Shirley, her second husband Cloyd Mortenson, and two grandchildren.
