Gary Gust Hoffman was born September 7, 1944 to Harley Sr. and Elsie (Hill) Hoffman in Belgrade, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Belgrade and attended school nearby at Georgeville.

He met the love of his life, Kathryn “Kay” Knebel. They were married April 10, 1965 at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church in Paynesville, Minnesota. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before Kay passed away June 27, 2020.

The couple lived around Atwater, Minnesota for about 15 years. Gary and his brothers began Hoffman Brothers and Tritabaugh Construction and operated it from 1966–1976. They did underground sewer and water and then later road work.

Gary and Kay moved to Clear Lake, South Dakota in 1980 where they crop farmed for 24 years. He then retired; he began his land acquisition business and rented his land to farmers.

For over 30 years they wintered in Arizona. The couple moved off the farm in 2011 and lived near Watertown, South Dakota.

Gary enjoyed flying, golfing and playing cards.
