Obituary for Gerald Ching

Dr. Gerald Keith Ching, age 73, formerly of Castlewood, SD, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Kindred Hospital in Tampa, FL after several years of struggling with Parkinson's disease. As a researcher, he was always looking for new methods to treat Parkinson's.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., with visitation for one hour prior to the services, on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Pastor Janine Rew-Werling officiating. Lynn Osthus will be the organist.
Interment will be at the Castlewood Cemetery, Castlewood, SD. Military honors will be conducted by Vietnam Veterans of America of Northeast SD Chapter 1054.
Pallbearers will be Greg, Jeff and Dan Ching, Jon Tesch, Laura Tesch Roozenboom and Larin Roozenboom.
Gerald Keith Ching was born October 14, 1947 at Luther Hospital in Watertown, SD to Howard and Eva (Bekke) Ching. He was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church at Castlewood. He grew up on the family farm near Castlewood and spent all 12 years in the Castlewood School system, graduating in 1965. Gerald received his pre-vet education at South Dakota State University and graduated with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. He was a member of the Alpha PSI Veterinarian Fraternity at the University of Minnesota. He received the Calab Dorr special scholarship award for maintaining greater than a 3.5 grade point average throughout all four years of professional school.
Gerald then served as a Captain in the Army Veterinary Medical Corps. His assignment was to the Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC. After his service, he practiced Veterinary Medicine in California and the last 40 years as a Veterinarian in Florida.
Gerald is survived by his sister, Carol (LeRoy) Tesch, Watertown, his sister-in-law, Terra Ching, Castlewood, his niece, Laura (Larin) Roozenboom, Rapid City, nephews Jon (Jessica) Tesch, Watertown, Greg (Brenda) Ching, Wheat Ridge, CO, Jeff (Tamra) Ching, Castlewood, and Dan (Jennifer) Ching, Sioux Falls, SD; his Aunt Wilma Ching, Castlewood, Aunt and Uncle Harriette & Woodard Ching, Greenville, SC, his good college friend, Steve Flora, Cumming, GA; and many cousins.
Whenever you talked with Gerald, he would ask about his nieces and nephews, as he followed their interests and was so proud of their successes. He would also ask about his great nieces and nephews: Sarah Ching, Carver (Lindsey) Ching, Canyon, Costner, Myles, Brandon, Alison and Hannah Ching, Landin Roozenboom, Adalyn, Lauren and Nora Tesch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Eva Ching, his brother, Larry Ching, and great nephew, Brennan Ching.
