Obituary for Geraldine Kay "Gerry" Martell

Gerry Martell, 78, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2019 at her residence.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown with Father Richard Fox officiating. Music will be furnished by granddaughter, Katie Drexler as soloist, the Immaculate Conception Funeral Choir and Danielle Holmquist-Holida as organist.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Gerry's Hi Rise friends.

Active Pallbearers will be Richard, Jim, Fred, John and Joe Van Hoorn and Mike Kelly.

Geraldine "Gerry" Kay Martell was born to Siebe and Evelyn (DeGreef) Van Hoorn on July 25, 1941 in rural Buffalo Center, Iowa. She grew up in Milbank, SD and attended school there. Gerry worked at Bill's Super Value in Milbank for several years.

On November 10, 1958, she married Kenneth Martell at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank, SD. To this union, four children were born. Gerry moved to Watertown in 1990 and began working at Midcom until retiring following 10 years there.

Gerry enjoyed spending time with friends, traveling, camping and fishing. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, baking and cooking, embroidery, watching Westerns, playing Bingo and Wii Golf. She was President of the Senior Citizen's Center for two years.

Gerry is survived by her children, Peggy (Al West) Sheldon from Watertown, SD, Teresa (Mike Kelly) Martell of Hallandale, FL, David (Sandy) Martell of Milbank, SD and Mary (Tim) Lewno of Castlewood, SD; her siblings, Norma (Larry) Peters of Milbank, SD, Richard (Doris) Van Hoorn of Amarillo, TX, Susan (Jack) Hippen of Milbank, SD, Jim Van Hoorn of Estelline, SD, Fred (Phyllis) Van Hoorn of Milbank, SD, Eileen (Rich) Olson of Rockport, TX, Patty (Brian) Hill of Hutchinson, MN, John Van Hoorn of Watertown, SD and Joe (Barb) Van Hoorn of Plato, MN; one sister-in-law, Cheryl Van Hoorn of Milbank, SD; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, one brother, Ron Van Hoorn and her dear friend, Larry Roskam.
