Obituary for Harold "Lee" Trumm

Harold “Lee” Trumm, age 91, of Watertown and formerly of Hayti, passed away Friday, May 13 th at the Avantara Lake Norden Care Center.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior, on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at the Hayti Lutheran Church Hayti. Pastor Jesse Hurkes will officiate with music by Annie Zimmer and Sarah Vanek.

Burial will be at the West Norden Cemetery near Hayti.

Pallbearers will be Dave Rawdon, Jeff Friskey, Jeremy Mack, Matthew Mack, Nathaniel Zimmer, Michael Vanek, Kevin Pond and Chris Thomson.


Harold “Lee” Trumm was born May 17, 1930 on the Trumm farm, 3 miles west of Hayti, SD to George and Cleola (Williams) Trumm. Lee attended grade school in Hayti until the 6th grade when his parents moved the family to Omaha (1942) where his parents assisted the war effort by working in the Fort Crook bomber plant building airplanes. In 1945 the family returned to the family farm west of Hayti. Lee graduated from Hayti High School in 1948 and enlisted in the Navy and was discharged in 1950. He was a member of the American Legion Hayti Cook-Olson Post 217.

On January 20th, 1952 he married Betty Cramott of Hayti where they made their home until Betty’s death in 1991. To this union they were blessed with three children. Lee and Betty enjoyed family time and fishing at Buffalo Lake. Lee worked for the Hamlin County CO-OP for 33 years before retiring. Lee restored many tractors and cars and was on a bowling team for many years. He was a member of the Hayti Lutheran Church. In 1992 Lee married Carolyn Bendt Drake of Hayti. Together they managed Memorial City Park for about 13 years. Carolyn passed away in 2015.

Lee is survived by his three children; Loralee and Cliff Rawdon of Watertown, SD, Cindy and Gene Mack of Kearney, NE, and Dana and Cathy Trumm of Aberdeen, SD; nine grandchildren; Sherri and Jeff Friskey of Watertown, SD, Candi and Chris Thomson of Sturgis, SD, Dave Rawdon of Watertown, SD, Jeremy Mack of Reston, VA, Matthew and Andrea Mack of Grand Island, NE, Annie and Nathaniel Zimmer of Louisville, NE, Sarah and Michael Vanek of Omaha, NE, Nichole and Kevin Pond of Brookings, SD and Jenna Trumm of Brookings, SD; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, one brother Milton Trumm, two sisters, Charlotte Opdahl and Lois Steffins, and his second wife Carolyn.


Lee’s family would like to thank Paster Randy Eisenbiez for his visits and the staffs at Avantara Lake Norden Care Center and the Prairie Lakes Hospice for all the special care they provided for our father and grandfather. It was so appreciated.
