Obituary for Helen C. Adams

Helen C. Adams, age 100, of Hazel, SD passed away April 11, 2022 in DeSmet, SD.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, April 15, 2022, with visitation one hour prior, at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD. Reverend Dirk Wynja will officiate with music by Mary Wynja as organist and Helen's great-grandchildren as vocalists.

Interment will be at Hazel Cemetery near Hazel, SD.

Pallbearers for Helen include Donald Adams Jr., Rory Adams, Allan Towles Jr., Shawn Wollman, Brian Adams, and Brian Zeeb.


Helen Catherine Adams, born July 31, 1921 to Harry Orlan Law and Lydia Amandia (Rider) Law, in Hamlin County, SD died on April 11, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society in DeSmet, SD. She was 100 years old at the time of her death.

Helen attended school in Brantford Country School and graduated from Hazel High School in 1939. She enjoyed riding her horse Tuffy and working in her garden. Her teen years were spent playing softball and her team won the South Dakota Softball Championship of 1953.

Helen earned her degree as a Registered Nurse from Bartron School of Nursing in Watertown, SD in 1942. Helen worked as a nurse for many years at Memorial Hospital in Watertown, SD.

On November 19, 1942, she married Donald W. Adams. After Don completed his service in the Army during World War II, they made their home and farmed in Hazel, SD. To their union was born six children: Carol (Dennis) Wollman, Rick (Donna) Adams, Roxanne (Allan) Towles, Donald Adams, Jr., Rory (Cheryl) Adams, and Mark (Bootsy) Adams.

A member of the Hazel Methodist Church, Helen served as president of their United Methodist Women’s group and she enjoyed teaching Sunday school.

She is survived by her six children, fourteen grandchildren: Shawn (Brenda) Wollman, Shannon (Brian) Zeeb, Amanda (Jack) Schrock, Christine Adams, Nicole (John) Carney, Erica (Ryan) Flynn, Erin Nelson, Adrienne (Blaine) Falkena, Brian (Melissa) Adams, Beth (Ryan) Vanden Bosch, Katie Adams, Emily (James) Leon, Ethan Adams, Mark (Mica) Adams Jr., and 36 great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 2003, after 61 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death are her parents, and her siblings: Maxine, Clifford, Wayne, Harold, Maynard, and Nellie.
