Howard Strege, age 97, of Watertown passed away Monday, October 22, 2018 at Prairie Lakes Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, on Friday, October 26, 2018 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown with Reverend Paul Krause officiating.    Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.    Pallbearers will be Howard’s grandchildren.      Howard Bernard Strege was born May 23, 1921, in the farm home in Germantown Township, Codington County, delivered by Dr. Hammond.  Howard was the son of August and Hilda (Giese) Strege.  He was baptized by Pastor Klett and confirmed by Pastor Erhart.  Howard attended grade school in Mayflower District 23 and then attended South Shore High School, but due to his father’s recurring illness from the 1918 flu epidemic, Howard was forced to quit his sophomore year to help on the farm.  He worked the land with horses, hand labor harvesting, shocking the cut grain and hauling to the threshing rigs.        Howard married Muriel Bundy in 1948, the couple was blest with nine children, Dale, Kenneth, Stanley, Nancy, Nila, David, Linda, Kimberly and Julie.  Shortly after marriage, health problems changed Howard’s vocation.  He attended South Dakota State University, managing East Men’s Hall to pay for schooling.  He graduated with a degree in education and accepted a teaching position in Nicollet, Minnesota at the high school.  After teaching for ten years, he accepted a position with State Farm Insurance and retired in 1988.  Howard returned to the family farm near Watertown, South Dakota.  He had much interest in agriculture and conservation practices, pioneering in terracing, no-till, shelter belts and stock dams.  He was awarded the Codington County Conservation Award.  The farm became a Sesquicentennial Farm in 2013 having been homesteaded before South Dakota was a state.              Howard was preceded in death by his parents, August and Hilda Strege; his beloved wife of 50 years, Muriel Strege; his son, Kenneth; sisters, Agnes (Lester) Schierenbeck, Helen (Earl) Bunde and Ione (Ray) Zechel.      He is survived by his children, Dale (Karla) Strege, Stanley (Patty) Strege, Nancy Strege, Nila Strege, David Strege, Linda Koch, Kimberly (James) Kazemba and Julie Strege; his 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.        Howard in concern for adhering to the inspired, inerrant Word of God became a charter member of the Church of the Lutheran Confession (CLC).  He served as a chairman, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and delegate to the synodical conference.  He had much interest in the development of Immanuel Lutheran High School and College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
