Obituary for Jerome N. Weiland

Jerome Nicholas Weiland, 81, of Bennington, Neb., formerly of Watertown, S.D., passed away Easter Sunday morning, April 4, 2021, at CHI Immanuel-Fontenelle in Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services will be held in Watertown, S.D. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel, 1111 Fourth Street Northeast. A funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Richard Fox at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 16, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Church, 309 Second Avenue Southeast.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Music by Danielle Holmquist-Holida, organist, and Dan Rademacher, soloist.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Weiland, Cody Kruse, Gregg Weiland, Gary Heisler, Al Taken, and Joe Dupont.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jasmine, Kayde, and Laney Weiland.


A lunch following the funeral will be held for family and friends at the home of Joe and Shelly Dupont.

Social distancing guidelines will be followed due to the continuing pandemic. A mask is requested to be worn for the protection of our family and friends.

Jerome “Jerry” Weiland was born August 25, 1939 to Leo and Ione (Yost) Weiland in Hastings, MN. He attended Incarnation Catholic School and graduated in 1957 from Washburn Senior High School, Minneapolis. Jerry served 2 years active duty and 4 years in the Reserves in the U.S. Navy (1957 to 1962). He and his twin brother John served together aboard the aircraft carriers USS Leyte and USS Tarawa. Afterwards, Jerry began a 40-year airline career, working in turn for North Central, Republic, Northwest and Delta airlines as gate agent, ticket agent and on the freight dock.

On Sept. 12, 1964, Jerry married Kathleen Elizabeth Dupont at Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown. Two sons, Thomas and Gregg Weiland, were born to them. In retirement, Jerry and Kathy enjoyed their fifth-wheel camper which gave them flexibility of winters in Texas and summers in Omaha for 10 years. They savored time spent with family and friends.

Jerry enjoyed following the Vikings and the Huskers, and had a passion for NASCAR which he shared with Tom and Drew. He appreciated Arielle’s horsemanship, and valued extended visits with Gregg, Dustina, and their daughters in Texas, often talking about their dedication to competitive swimming and soccer. He enjoyed his Sunday evening bowling league, achieving a high game score of 227.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Kathleen; brothers Donald and John; his parents-in-law Anton and Bernice (Kranz) Dupont, of Kranzburg, S.D.; three brothers-in-law Johnny and Anthony Dupont; Rollin Imme and sisters-in-law Antonette Imme, Mary (Dupont) Heisler and Margaret (Marge) Keating, and daughter-in-law Dustina Weiland.

Jerry is survived by his children, Thomas (Dawn) Weiland of Omaha, NE, and Gregg Weiland of Flower Mound, TX; five grandchildren Andrew (Lindsey) Weiland, of Omaha; Arielle Weiland (fiancé Cody Kruse), of David City, NE; Jasmine, Kayde and Laney Weiland, of Flower Mound, TX; and three great grandsons Hunter, David City, NE; Jaxon and Jameson, of Omaha, NE. He is also survived by siblings Ronald Weiland, Bloomington, MN.; and Roxann “Susie” (Weiland) Thoreen, St. Cloud, MN., sisters-in-law Connie Dupont, Jolene (Scott) Haywood, both of Rapid City, SD; Joan Reilly of North Chile, NY; and Barb (Al) Taken of Watertown, SD; brothers-in-law Joe (Shelly) Dupont of Watertown; Gary Heisler, of Spearfish, SD; and Dean Keating, Watertown SD; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
