Obituary for Judith K. "Judy" Hartwig

Judy Hartwig, age 82, of Watertown, SD passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2022.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Monday, June 13, 2022 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown with Reverend Luke Smith and Reverend Heidi Binstock officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Sunday, June 12, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be designated to Codington County Cares, 818 South Broadway, Watertown, SD 57201.

Honorary pallbearers will be Judy’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Hartwig, Brandon Vazquez, Bryson Vazques, Brady Hartwig Andy Senge and Logan Arends.


Judy Hartwig, daughter of Wesley and Margaret Smith was born on January 17, 1940 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Judy grew up in Rapid City and Watertown, SD.

Judy met Orville,the love of her life,and married him on April 13, 1956. To this union, 6 children were born. Alan (Becky), Sharie, Mark (Dawn), Scott (Cathee), Brian (Sarah), Dawn (Andres).

Orville and Judy owned Hartwig Heating where Judy did the bookkeeping until her passing. Judy also owned a clothing store (Judith K’s) with locations in both Watertown and Sioux Falls.

Judy was an avid bowler and golfer. She was in charge of the golf leagues at the Municipal Golf Course for many years. Judy had a loving group of friends that she enjoyed having lunch with, especially, her best friend of 57 years, Geri Mohror.

Judy enjoyed playing games on her tablet, reading on her kindle, and spending time with her friends and children. Judy was able to spend her final days watching her granddaughter get married and spending time with her family.

Judy is survived by her children, Alan (Becky) Hartwig of Crooks, SD, Sharie Bekaert of Watertown, SD, Mark (Dawn) Hartwig of Watertown, SD, Scott (Cathee) Hartwig of Canistota, SD, Brian (Sarah) Hartwig of Spearfish, SD and Dawn (Andres) Vazquez of Watertown, SD; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Margaret Smith; her husband, Orville; her granddaughter, Briana Vazquez; and her sister, Margery Whitten.
