Obituary for Julia V. Schumacher

Julia Schumacher, age 82, of Clear Lake, SD, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023 in Clark, SD.

Memorial services will be 11:00 am, Friday, May 19, 2023 at First United Methodist Church in Watertown with Pastor Jen Tyler officiating. The service will be live streamed through the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be at Thomas Cemetery near Thomas, SD.

Julia Virginia Hunter was born April 4, 1940 in Watertown, South Dakota to Herbert and Anne Marie (Brown) Hunter. The family moved to a farm near Thomas, South Dakota where she attended school until the 11th grade and then graduated from Hazel High School in 1958. Julia graduated with a nursing degree in 1961 from Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She worked in Watertown at the Memorial Hospital in the acute care department and then in the maternity ward.

Julia and Arlin Schumacher were united in marriage on November 4, 1967 at the First United Methodist Church in Watertown. The couple was blessed with 55 years of marriage.

Julia was the first Public Health Nurse in Codington County from 1970 to 1975 when the family moved to an acreage north of Clear Lake and built a home. In 1978, Julia worked at Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake and was the director of nursing for 20 years. She then moved into a new job with Adult Aging and Services for a ten county area in Northeast South Dakota for about three years. Julia received a job offer to serve as a Minimum Data Set (MDS) nurse for the state of South Dakota in Pierre. Julia lived in an apartment in Pierre, driving home on the weekends, before retiring in 2008.

She loved visiting with people and would help anyone who needed anything. She was interested in pursuing her family history and worked hard on the family tree. Julia also enjoyed crocheting, quilting and gardening to which she had large gardens. She loved to bake and enjoyed looking up new recipes to try.

Julia volunteered at church; working with the prayer team and church directory.

Julia is survived by her husband, Arlin Schumacher of Clear Lake, SD; her children, Steven (Susie) Hunter of Key West, FL, Lisa (Dallas Christensen) Lowe of Castlewood, SD, LaNora (Scott) Brandenberger of Clear Lake, SD and Alan (Susie) Schumacher of Paragould, AR; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her siblings, Patsy (Dave) Spencer of Spencer, IA, Mary Beth (Roger) Grotjohn of Savage, MN, Stanley (Bonnie) Hunter of Hayti, SD and Roxie (Bob) Shultz of Hayti, SD; brother-in-law, Neil (Marlene) Schumacher of Gary, SD; sister-in-law, Nancy Schumacher of Connecticut; and her nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant daughter, Jennifer; and a host of aunts and uncles.
