Obituary for Karen Joyce Darling

Karen Joyce Kellogg Darling, age 80, of Watertown, SD, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021 in Watertown.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, 2021, with visitation starting at noon, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown with Reverend Steve Anderson officiating.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Honorary pallbearers with be Karen's friends and family.

Pallbearers will be her brother-in-laws and friends.

Karen Joyce Darling was born April 28, 1940 to Grant and Lois (Robbins) Kellogg at the family farm home in Fuller Township, Codington County, South Dakota. She grew up in Codington County and attended grades 1-8 at Lakeview #3. From grades 9-12 she attended Watertown High School and graduated in 1958. She then attended Northern State College with a two year certificate in Elementary Education.

She was united in marriage with David Lee Darling on June 19, 1960 in Watertown. Two children were blessed to this couple, Dean on June 3, 1969 and Deirdre on August 16, 1971.

Karen was employed by the Deputy County Superintendent of Schools for Codington County from 1960 – 1969. She then worked “on call” from 1969-1975 for the Clerk of Courts in Codington County and filled in as a secretarial capacity during vacation times in offices of County Judge and States Attorney. Karen was employed at Cook’s Inc. in Watertown from 1985-1998 and then at Americal, Inc. in Aberdeen from 1998-2004.

Karen was involved in numerous organizations and activities such as: HOA Club, a member since 1969 where she held various offices, Three Way Extension Club, a member since 1974 and also held various offices, ARC from 1977 to 1999, also was a member of EUB/Ninth Avenue/Cornerstone United Methodist Church since 1953, and Codington County Preservation Committee from 1985-1987, the Codington County Historical Society from 1985-1993 and then the Zoological Society from 1990 to present.

Karen is survived by her husband, David of Watertown; her son, Dean (Melissa) Darling of Watertown; her grandchildren, D.J. Darling and Samantha (Armando) Euceda, Paige Goodhouse, Joshua Darling; and her sister, Judith Sikkink.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Lois Kellogg; her daughter, Deirdre Dawn Darling; her brother, Kenneth Kellogg; and her stepfather, Paul Lehr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Food Pantry at Cornerstone or Camping Scholarships at Cornerstone at 1350 11th St. NE., Watertown, SD 57201.
