Obituary for Kathryn Louise Asfeld

Kathryn Louise Asfeld, age 82, of Florence, SD, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2023 at Florence, SD.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, with a rosary at 6:30 pm, on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Florence, SD.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am, Friday, April 14, 2023 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Father Doug Binsfeld as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Beardsley, MN.

Pallbearers will be Paul Asfeld, Kevin Asfeld, Theodore Bowman, Jared Nelson, Matthew Hiedeman, Daniel Donnay and Josh Pietruszewski.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Kathryn's grandchildren.

Kathryn Louise (Holker) Asfeld was born April 10, 1940 in Graceville, MN to Bernard and Christine (Stallman) Holker. She was baptized in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Beardsley, MN on April 21, 1940, received her 1st Holy Communion in June of 1948, had a Solemn Communion in 1949, and was confirmed at St. Mary's on July 3, 1954 during the Centennial of St. Mary's Parish with Bishop Burns officiating. She attended her first 7 grades in Stephany Country School and except for a few weeks she was the only one in her grade all 7 years. The 8th through 12th grades were in the Beardsley School.

After graduation in 1958 Kathryn attended Rasmussen Business School in St. Paul, MN in a private secretarial course. Also she worked part time in the evenings at the Golden Rule in the Twin Cities while attending business school. After graduating, Kathryn went to work at the G.R. Herberger's Central Office in St. Cloud, MN as a private secretary to the office manager for two years.

On June 24, 1961 she married Robert "Bob" Asfeld. She helped him on the farm and on a custom harvesting run. Kathryn was appointed Eucharistic Minister on March 17, 1998 by Bishop Raymond Lucker. In 2007 Kathryn moved to Florence, SD. She worked with Experience Works for 3 years, first for the Red Cross and later traveled with a laptop computer and taught computer one on one, which was very enjoyable. She worked for Brad Nelson for a couple years in manufactured home sales. Later she worked with the Shine program helping people determine which Part D prescription program would be the best choice.

Kathryn enjoyed family get-togethers, playing cards, knitting and going to concerts. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and working on her computer.

Left to cherish her memory are her seven children: RoseAnn (Jeff) Donnay, Wilmot, SD, Edward (Michelle) Asfeld, Fleming, CO, David (Michele) Asfeld, Chokio, MN, Carol (Ed) Hiedeman, Beardsley, MN, Christine (Jon) Pietruszewski, Kennedy, MN, Rita (Larry) Bergh, Wallace, SD and Diane (Ryan) Bowman, Hollandale, MN; 21 grandchildren: Daniel (Ashley) Donnay, Melissa (Nathan) Jurgens, Nicole (Grant) Remily all of Wilmot, SD, Steven and Paul Asfeld, Fleming, CO, Julie (Michael) McClaran, Sterling, CO, Molly (Cody) Krosch, Alberta, MN, Adam (Summer) Asfeld, Olivia, MN, Mary Asfeld, Wahpeton, MN, Kevin Asfeld, Lowry, MN, Jessica (Andrew) Dietz, Dumont, MN, Mike (Kayla) Hiedeman and Stacy (Christian) Grondahl, West Fargo, ND, Matt (Quincy) Hiedeman, Harper, KS, Carrie (James) Backman, Wheaton, MN, Josh Pietruszewski, Kennedy, MN, Amanda (Jaron) Englund, Karlstad, MN, Chantel (Nathan) Duerre, Bristol, SD, Jared Nelson of Wallace, SD, Andrew and Theodore Bowman, Hollandale, MN; 35 great grandchildren; brothers, Jerome (Helen) Holker, Edward (Florence) Holker; and one sister, Helen (Gary) Melcher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one granddaughter, Ashley Nelson, who passed away at the age of 9 days old.
