Obituary for Larry J. Schmeling

Larry J. Schmeling, age 72 of Watertown, SD passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2022.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Monday, May 16, 2022 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown.

Visitation will be 3-5 pm, Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Spencer, Hunter, Parker and Ryan Riddle and Bayler Jerde.

Pallbearers will be Steve May, Kerry Jurgens, Darin Johannsen, Paul Rystrom, Matt Redlin and David Redlin.


Larry James Schmeling was born November 5, 1949 in Watertown, South Dakota to Roy L. and Doris (Freeland) Schmeling. He grew up around Lake Kampeska in Watertown. Larry graduated from Watertown High School in 1968 and then graduated from Dakota State University in 1973. He worked at Timmerman Wood Working in high school and after college he was employed at Dakota Pump & Control with his father.

Larry and Linda Bracht were united in marriage October 6, 1972 at Holy Name Church in Watertown. Larry was a business man in sales and rental properties. He also built and operated Town and Country Square.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge and G & N Gun Club.

Larry loved sharing his knowledge and wisdom with his family especially his grandsons. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, planting trees and loved the outdoors. He was an avid supporter of Lakers Hockey and spent many years watching his grandsons play. Larry loved animals of all kinds and often would take in strays or made sure the wildlife surrounding the house was well taken care of.

Larry is survived by his wife, Linda of Watertown; his children, Jamie (Scott) Riddle, Sarah Schmeling and Beth (Jason) Jerde all of Watertown; five grandchildren, Spencer, Hunter, Parker and Ryan Riddle and Bayler Jerde; and two sisters, Linda (Ed) Williams and Lana (Rod) Redlin all of Watertown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Doris; and parents-in-law, Marland and Bernice Bracht.
