Marion H. Paulis was born to Carl and Helen (Rogers) Paulis on July 30, 1948 in Watertown, SD. She grew up in Watertown and graduated from Watertown Senior High School in 1966. She attended SDSU in Brookings, graduating with a B.S. degree in textiles and marketing in 1971. As part of an exchange program with SDSU, Marion attended the FIT program at New York State University, before returning after graduation to make her home in Watertown. She worked for 30 years in the printing business at Interstate Publishing. Her efficiency and personal attention to detail allowed her to cultivate many professional relationships, which helped her when she left printing to start the Daily Post computer store, which she operated for 10 years.

Her true calling came to fruition later in life, when she was ordained an Episcopal priest. The priesthood was a logical path for Marion, as she had grown up in the Church and served many roles, including Altar Guild and Senior Warden. She was inspired, encouraged and mentored by her friendship with the Rev. Karen E. Hall, who helped her navigate the path to the priesthood. She was ordained in November 2011 and served as priest of Christ Episcopal Church in Milbank, SD for the last 11 years, until her health forced her to retire.

Marion loved her parishioners very much and enjoyed the life of a parish priest.

Although Marion had no children of her own, she was the proud and loving owner of many cats (and even a dog!) over the years. She was also blessed to be called Auntie M by her godchildren, Michael and Jon Skinner and was a “bonus mom” to Karen’s four children, Kirstin, Jennifer, Andy and most especially, Kathleen.

As a lifelong member of Watertown’s community, Marion was full of stories about the neighborhoods, historic houses and businesses in town. Entrepreneurship was in her blood. Her family’s business, Paulis Co. was a prominent downtown business until it burned in 1988. Her brother’s business, Chuck’s Bike and Lock has been a fixture in the Watertown community for almost 40 years. Marion’s endearing stories, wry observations, keen wit and loving personality will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory and share her stories are her brother, Chuck (Carroll) Paulis of Watertown, SD; her extended family, Kirstin (Jeff) Chapman of Arvada, CO, Jennifer (Mike) Sample of Platte City, MO, Andrew Hall of New Brighton, MN, Kathleen (Jeff) Wyant of Sioux Falls, SD, Bonnie (Dave) Hollen of Hollidaysburg, PA, and Fr. and Mrs. Charlie (Ewa) Chan of Sisseton, SD; countless friends and her devoted cat, Hannah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her friend and companion, The Rev. Karen E. Hall.
