Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Cypher

Mary E. Cypher, age 95, of Hazel, SD, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the Estelline Nursing & Care Center. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2018 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown with Father Daniel Smith and Monsignor Charles Mangan as concelebrants. Special music will be provided by Mary's grandson, Andy Langenfeld and his wife, Mandy, the Immaculate Conception Funeral Choir and Danielle Holmquist-Holida as organist. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Grover, SD. Pallbearers will be Mary's sons: Michael, Thomas, James, John and Timothy Cypher. Mary Elizabeth Cypher was born on January 16, 1923 to Charles and Margaret (O'Connor) Martin at home on the family farm north of Crocker, SD. She attended country school near home and in 1940 she graduated from the Cathedral Catholic School in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1941 she received her one year teaching degree and taught for four years. Mary married Lloyd M. Cypher on June 5, 1945 at the Catholic Church in Crocker. Mary enjoyed being around children. After 10 years she continued her education, receiving her two year degree, her four year degree and then her Master's degree with counseling. Mary was the Elementary Principal at Willow Lake, Toronto and Florence. She had taught for 43 years. Mary is survived by her six daughters, Mary Jane (John) Rich, Margaret (David) Langenfeld, Dorothy (Jerry) Stewart, Rita (Charles) Marotz, Christine (Larry) Cain, and Jean (Timothy) Novak; five sons, Michael (Eileen), Thomas, James (Brenda), John (Kimberly) and Timothy; a daughter-in-law, Melanie Opitz; one sister, Gertrude Mangan; 31 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, one son Patrick, one grandson Benjamin, three great-granddaughters Harlie, Hunter, and Erikka, three brothers Thomas, Paul, and Charles, and one sister Catherine Bell.
