Obituary for Mary Ruth Peterson
Mary R. Peterson, 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Jenkins Living Center. She was the widow of Boyd Peterson.
Public Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Bryant, SD with Pastor Scott Dempster officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please designate memorials to Jenkins Pastoral Care.
Mary Ruth Peterson was born to Walter F. and Mary (Singrey) Hanthorn on March 18, 1927 in Hazel, SD. She attended school in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1945. She then graduated from Bartron School of Nursing in 1947.
On June 11, 1950 Mary married Boyd A. Peterson at First United Methodist Church in Watertown and the couple lived and farmed near the Vienna/Bryant, SD area. Mary worked for two years at Memorial Hospital in Watertown. As their children left home, Boyd and Mary began offering Daycare.
Mary was well-known for her skill of hardanger embroidery. Through the years she made many hardanger doilies, tablecloths, and bell pulls. Her hardanger pieces were treasured gifts.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a former member of Order of the Eastern Star (Wilmot).
Mary is survived by her children, Roxie Ahlbrecht of Sioux Falls, SD, Robin (Steve) Knutson of Woodbury, MN, Kurt (Elaine) Peterson of Rockport, TX, and Ed (Julie) Peterson of Watertown, SD; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Geraldine Fryslie and Charline Peterson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Boyd A. Peterson, her daughter Karen Dunn, four brothers, Jesse, Everett, Melvin and Walter "Wally" Hanthorn, and one sister Carol Nesheim.
