Honorary Pallbearers are the Estelline Nursing & Care Center staff, Dr. Hollis Nipe, Tom Clarke, Gloria Glenzer, Dr. Ed & Ann Larson and all of Mary’s farm neighbors.

Mary Barbara Ruhr was born at home, near Goodwin, South Dakota on September 16, 1939 to Frank and Cecilia (Schmit) Ruhr. Mary was the oldest of seven children. She attended school in Kranzburg and Goodwin; in the Fall of 1951, her parents, Mary and four siblings, at that time, moved from south of Goodwin to a farm northwest of Troy. Mary then attended school at Troy and then graduated from South Shore High School in 1957.

She was in 4-H in her younger years and won many ribbons for baking and canning. Later in life, Mary held on to her baking and canning skills and then began her crafting skills. She won many ribbons and trophies at the Farm & Home shows in Milbank and Watertown with some of the entries going to the State Fair.

Mary enjoyed crafts for many years along with crossword puzzles and watching the Wheel of Fortune in which she could solve the puzzles right up to the end of her life. Mary also liked to go the area “Hoe Downs” and Bingo. She liked her music and enjoyed playing her accordion.

Mary worked very hard on the family farm and enjoyed raising many bottle lambs. Mary stayed on the farm until she entered the Estelline Nursing & Care Center on September 16, 2016. At her new residence, she was still able to enjoy Bingo and music. She loved the Care Center’s dog, “Annie” whom she claimed as her dog.

Mary was a wonderful sister and will be sadly missed by her siblings, LouAnn (Don) Desrosier of Watertown, Janice Ageton of Watertown, Diana Ruhr of Sioux Falls, Benita Ruhr of Watertown, Francis (Honalaura) Ruhr of Texas and Linette (David) Churchill of Watertown; and also her nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Larry Ageton.

We wish to thank the staff at the Care Center for the tremendous care that Mary received. Each and every one of you went above and beyond to provide the best care for Mary and she loved you all.

A heartful thank you to Dr. Harb and the 3rd floor nurses and staff at Prairie Lakes Hospital for making Mary’s last days comfortable.

A special thank you to George and Marcella Miller for writing Mary weekly; she enjoyed those letters and looked forward to them.
