Mary E. Carpenter Snyder
November 13,1930 – March 22, 2023

Mary E. Carpenter Snyder, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, March 22 at the Avantara Care Center in Watertown, South Dakota.

Visitation will be from 4-6 pm, on Monday, March 27 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel and on Tuesday, prior to services at the church.

Funeral services will be at 11 am, Tuesday, March 28 at the First United Methodist Church in Watertown, with Pastor Bryce Blank officiating. Eloise Falk will be organist.

Interment will be at a later date at the De Smet Cemetery, De Smet, SD.

Pallbearers will be Dave Mors, Jon Mors, Nickolas Mors, Brett Rasmussen, Matt Cadwell and Mitchell Snyder.

Mary was born on November 13,1930 to Orville and Alma (Wickre) Carpenter on a farm near Huron, SD. She moved with her family to a farm near De Smet, and Mary attended country school and De Smet High School, graduating in 1948 as co-valedictorian. She had the distinction of being the first President of the Future Homemakers of America in SD and helped write the Charter Constitution for it. She was also a Girls State Delegate in the first year of its existence in SD. She worked at the De Smet News part-time during high school and for two years after high school.

Mary married Dale S. Snyder on November 19, 1950. Dale and Mary owned De Smet Dry Cleaners for 18 years, and she also worked as a receptionist for Dr. Louis Karlen. They moved to Castlewood, SD for four years, where Mary worked at the bank. They moved to Watertown in 1978 and Mary was employed at First Federal Bank (now Plains Commerce Bank) for 14 years, retiring in 1995.

Mary was active in many organizations throughout her lifetime, including Boy and Girl Scouts for her children. After moving to Watertown, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and Prairie Lakes Hospital Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the banner and quilting club at First United Methodist Church. Her volunteer efforts included working at the Prairie Lakes Hospital Gift Shop, delivering Meals on Wheels and Jenkins Nursing Home.

She enjoyed sewing and was a beautiful seamstress, an avid book reader, and a master at word and trivia games. Mary was always known to be kind and sweet, with a keen wit and uplifting sense of humor. She was devoted to her family from early on, starting with her grandparents, her parents, siblings, husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dale, son Ronald Snyder, granddaughter Lindsey Mors, stepmother Lottie Carpenter, brothers Leon and his wife Kathleen Carpenter, and Neil Carpenter, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lester and Lenore Johnson.

She is survived by her children, Linda (David) Mors of Watertown, SD; Joe (Lisa) Snyder of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Edward (Rhonda) Snyder of Custer, SD; and Laurie (John) Rasmussen of Volga, SD; sister Alma (Jim) Burvee of Zimmerman, MN; brother John (Marian) Carpenter of Athens, GA; sister-in-law JoAnn Carpenter of Mankato, MN; seven grandchildren: Scott Mors, Jon Mors, Erica Snyder, Tessa Snyder, Mitchell Snyder, Jessica (Rasmussen) Cadwell and Brett Rasmussen; and six great-grandchildren.
