Obituary for Maxine Owen
Maxine Owen (widow of Manly), age 100, of Watertown and formerly of South Shore, passed away Friday, May 5, 2023.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m., with a funeral mass to follow at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. Father Richard Fox will be the celebrant.
Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown.
Pallbearers will be Maxine's grandsons: Kelly Owen, Kevin Owen, Rob Carpenter, Jake Eichhorn, Skip Letrud and Josh Letrud.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
Maxine Elizabeth (Pugh) Owen was born January 21, 1923 to Clement and Elizabeth (Stoddard) Pugh on a farm near Summit, SD in Grant County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Maxine attended school until the eighth grade at Farmington Township #3 and then graduated from Summit High School in 1941.
On April 20, 1947, Maxine was united in marriage to Manly Owen at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Waubay, SD. To this union three children were born: Gloria, Wayne and Beverly.
Manly and Maxine lived in South Shore, SD and operated the Owen Cattle Company. Maxine's kitchen in South Shore was always busy, with baking, cooking or making the best coffee in town! She moved to 200 Maple Place in Watertown, SD after Manly's death in 2007.
While at Maple Place, Max's favorite pastimes were reading books, doing word finds, jigsaw puzzles, watching Hallmark movies and ice-skating, and loved playing Pinochle. She never failed to go to exercise class three times a week. She loved her 3rd floor friends and the "5:00 Chat Group".
Maxine was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown, SD. She was a devout Catholic-praying and saying the rosary daily.
Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the tender part of her life. Always loving and always listening. She always attended their activities.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Manly; grandson, Richie Carpenter; her parents; brothers, Don, Norm, DeEll and John; and a sister, Marge Amdahl.
Left to cherish her memory are: Gloria (Tom) Letrud of Louisburg, MN, Wayne (Nancie) Owen of South Shore, SD, Bev Carpenter of Watertown, SD; a sister, Iva Lowe of Watertown, SD; three sisters-in-law, Barb, Bev and Marion Pugh; eight grandchildren: Kelly Owen, Kevin Owen (fiancee, Courtney Hansen), Megan Owen, Libby Carpenter, Rob (Sara) Carpenter, Jada Letrud and husband, Jake Eichhorn, Skip Letrud and Josh Letrud; great grandchildren: Taylor, Kylie, and Jalen Carpenter, Owen (Gracie) Rieffenberger, Max Rieffenberger, Ethan, Joselyn and Preslie Owen, Riley and Kendell Owen, Lexie Fleming, Haylee and Maycie Hansen.
