Obituary for Merlyn H. Sulzle
Merlyn Sulzle was born in Akaska SD on October 19, 1938. He graduated from the Northwestern Lutheran Academy in Mobridge, SD. He married Della (Suko) during a blizzard on February 23, 1957. One year later almost to the day, February 24, 1958, they welcomed their first son, Dan, into the world. In the next three years, they would welcome three additional children, Robin, Jean, and Dale.
Merlyn worked as an auto mechanic for many years but continued advanced schooling and eventually earned his teaching certificate. In 1973 he began his teaching career at Multi District Career Center in Watertown, SD. Merlyn and his students received many state and national awards and honors throughout his years of teaching. His retirement years were spent traveling around the United States and working on building projects for the organization Builders for Christ.
Merlyn passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 81.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, Della, and his children: Dan, Robin (Joel Carlson), Jean, and Dale (Jane Marie). He also is survived by his grandchildren: David, Jacob, Catherine, Christopher, Katarina, and Noah along with sisters: Sharon (Chuck Marsh), Sarah (Rodney Sheldon), and sisters-in-law Helen (Quentin Sulzle) and Charlene Krog Isakson (Wayne Sulzle).
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 3, 2020 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Visitation will be on Saturday for one hour prior to the services at the church.
Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.
Memorials may be designated to Great Plains Lutheran High School, 1200 Luther Ln NE, Watertown, SD 57201.
