Obituary for Norris O. Johnson

Norris O. Johnson, a former Watertown resident passed away peacefully on October 1, 2018 at his home in Anaheim, CA.  He was 100 years and 8 months old. Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2018 at Goodhue Lutheran Church in Florence with Reverend Mindy Ehrke officiating.   Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Inurnment will be at the Goodhue Cemetery, Florence, SD. Urn bearers will be Craig Johnson, David Paulson, Christopher Chun and Mark Furuuchi.  Norris Oliver Johnson, son of Nels and Olga (Larson) Johnson, was born on February 1, 1918 on the family farm near Florence, SD.  He was one of five children.  He graduated from Florence High School, and was baptized and confirmed at Goodhue Lutheran Church.  Norris married Nettie (Paulson) Johnson August 14, 1943 in Florence, SD.  They were married for over 71 years until her passing in 2015. He enlisted and served in the United States Army Corps during WWII.  He and Nettie lived in Columbia, South Carolina where he was stationed during the war. Norris served as an aircraft maintenance technician working on the B-25 Mitchell Bomber. After the war they returned to South Dakota. They had four children, Gary, born in Columbia and Patricia, Stanley and Becky born in Watertown.  He worked as an auto mechanic at the Chevrolet and then Packard dealerships in Watertown until he went into business for himself.  He owned and operated two service stations, Johnson Texaco and Eastside Texaco during the 1950’s and 60’s.  He also founded Gator Manufacturing Co. in Watertown, maker of the Gator truck hoist. In 1964 Norris and Nettie and the three children still at home moved to Anaheim, CA where Norris continued to work in auto repair and auto air conditioning. Upon retirement he enjoyed living a good life in California, making many trips back to South Dakota and around the country visiting family and friends. Norris is preceded in death by his wife, Nettie, parents, Nels and Olga, brothers, Clifford, Julian and Raymond, and sister, Esther Lewis.  He is survived by his children, Gary (Joyce) of Rapid City, Patti (Jonathan) of Anaheim, CA, Becky (Richard) of Trabuco Canyon, CA, Stanley of Corona, CA.  In addition, he is survived by his 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Edith Johnson and Grace Paulson of Watertown. A memorial service will be held on November 12 th at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Buena Park, CA.  A celebration of life will take place following that service at his home of 54 years in Anaheim.
