Obituary for Orlyn Gapp

Orlyn Gapp, age 81, of South Shore, SD, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at his residence.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 25, 2021 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in South Shore with Reverend Ken Nelson.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in South Shore.

Facemasks are required. Thank you.

Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in South Shore with military honors conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America NE SD Chapter 1054.

Pallbearers will be Orlyn’s grandsons, Erik Spencer, Jeff Gapp, Kevin Gapp, Paul Gapp, Brian Smook, Jon Meidinger and Bradley Kent.


Orlyn Gene Gapp was born June 10, 1939 to Floyd and Delma (Lentz) Gapp on the family farm in Mazeppa Township in Grant County, South Dakota. He attended country school and South Shore High School. He entered the United States Navy July 1, 1957. He was with the U.S.S. Pickaway and was honorably discharged March 29, 1961.

Orlyn was united in marriage with Judy Lupinek on June 27, 1957 in Waubay, South Dakota. He worked for local farmers around South Shore and was employed by Cold Spring Granite for 34 years as an overhead crane operator.

Orlyn enjoyed gardening, fishing and mowing grass but he especially loved being with his kids and grandchildren.

Orlyn is survived by his wife, Judy Gapp of South Shore, SD; his children, Wayne (Shelly) Gapp of Milbank, SD, Tammy (Gary) Spencer of Sisseton, SD, Connie (Terry) Smook of Sioux Falls, SD and Donna (James) Arten of Summit, SD; his siblings, Leon Gapp of Marvin, SD and Carol Ferguson of Monahan, TX; ten grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Delma Gapp; his in-laws, Arther and Elvie Lupinek; sister-in-law, Betty Gapp; brother-in-law, Harold Ferguson; and his great-granddaughter, Brielle Gonzalez.
