Obituary for Orville A.J. Schultz

Orville Schultz, age 93, of Watertown, and formerly of New Effington, SD passed away Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Avantara Clark, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Monday, June 6, 2022 at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. Reverend Dave Nerdig will officiate with Robbyn Givens as the soloist accompanied by Mary Wika.

Visitation will be 2-4 pm, Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Interment will be at Garden of Rest Cemetery (Faith Lutheran Garden of Rest) in New Effington, SD.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Orville’s granddaughters: Lisa Petersen, Stephanie Fedorowicz, Jamie Simon and Lindsay Goetz.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Jason Birchem, Justin Birchem, Eric Niemann, Kevin Schultz, Marcus Toppen and Tanner Toppen.

Orville Alvin Jerome Schultz was born January 1, 1929 to Albert and Alma (Nelson) Schultz in Sisseton SD. He grew up in rural New Effington and attended school there, graduating from high school in 1948.
Orville married Avis Cornelius on October 1, 1949 in New Effington and they made their home in rural New Effington where Orville enjoyed being a husband, father and farmer. Together, he and Avis raised five children.

Orville was very active in Faith Lutheran Church where he was a charter member and where he was a loyal member of the church choir. Orville and Avis moved to Watertown in 2000 where Orville continued to be active in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer choir.

Orville and Avis enjoyed traveling and wintered in Texas for several years. The highlight of their travels was going to Japan to visit their son, Gary and family and seeing the sights of Tokyo and Taiwan.

Orville was an avid hunter of geese, ducks, pheasants and fox and really enjoyed fishing. “You can’t beat a good Northern”!

Grateful for having shared in his life were his children Gary (Kathy) Schultz of Wildwood, MO, Julie (Lyle) Niemann of Altoona, WI, Peggy (Larry) Birchem of Bowdle, SD and Mary (Donna Frederick) Toppen of La Crosse, WI; one sister, Grace Swenson of Delano, MN and sister-in-law Barb Cornelius of Watertown, SD; 10 grandchildren Stephanie (Dan) Fedorowicz, Lindsay (Geoff) Goetz, Kevin (Lindsey) Schultz; Lisa (Eric) Petersen, Eric (Sara) Niemann; Jason (Kari) Birchem, Justin Birchem, Jamie (Nick) Simon; Marcus (Leah) Toppen, Tanner (Whitney) Toppen and 21 great-grandchildren: Maya and James Fedorowicz; Matthew, Katherine and Andrew Goetz: Alex and Sam Schultz; Gavin, Avery and Evelyn Larson; Ellie and Adelynn Petersen; Carson and Preston Niemann; Payton, Ethan and Elizabeth Birchem; Alexis, Lucas, Cole and Carter Simon.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Avis, his son, James; his sisters, Junette Bostrom, Arlene Wolff, Hazel Danek, Dorothy Konn and Helen Swenson.
