Obituary for Patrick "Pat" Mahowald

Patrick Mahowald, age 81, of Watertown, SD passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020 in Watertown. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Pat’s life will be 11:00 am, Friday, October 23, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown with Fr. Richard Fox as celebrant. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Watertown.

The visitation will also be at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday, October 22 from 4-7:00 pm with a scripture service and rosary at 7:00 pm.

Masks are strongly encouraged but are not mandatory for the visitation and funeral. The funeral service will be recorded and uploaded to the Wight and Comes website.

Pallbearers will be Pat’s grandchildren: Joseph, John, Drew, Nick, Sam, Mark, Caroline Mahowald, and Wellington Martinson.

Patrick Joseph Mahowald was born March 17, 1939 to Benedict J. and Mary F. (Rozum) Mahowald in Watertown, South Dakota. He grew up in Watertown, attending Immaculate Conception Catholic School and Watertown High School, graduating in 1957. He graduated from St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN in 1961. Pat worked at Mahowald’s Hardware Store, Courtesy Motors and then began a career in real estate that spanned over 40 years.

Pat married Colette Desnoyers on October 5, 1963 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Clark, South Dakota. Pat and Colette celebrated 52 years of marriage before Colette passed away on December 11, 2015.
Pat was united in marriage with Karen Johnson Englert on May 15, 2019. Pat and Karen made their home on Lake Kampeska.

Pat was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Watertown Rotary Club and the Elks Lodge 838. He served on many boards on the local, state and national level.

Pat was very devoted to God, his Catholic faith, and his family. In September he completed his 46th annual retreat at the Jesuit Retreat House-Demontreville near Lake Elmo, MN. He was a proud grandfather and enjoyed attending any and all of his grandchildren’s events. He had a fondness for spirited cribbage games and monthly poker nights. Lake Kampeska was a life-long attraction and he enjoyed watching each season’s beauty unfold.

Pat is survived by his wife, Karen Englert Mahowald of Watertown; his children, Thomas (Tracy) Mahowald of Eagan, MN, Monica Mahowald of Watertown, Andy (Becky) Mahowald of Watertown, Phil (fiancée, Travis Martinson) Mahowald of Apple Valley, MN and Margaret Mahowald of Wayzata, MN, and eight grandchildren; Karen’s sons, Dave (Kathy) Englert of Sioux Falls, Pat (Jody) Englert Northfield, MN, Dale (Debbie) Englert of New Hope, MN and Chuck (Sheri) Englert of Huron, SD, and Karen’s seven grandchildren; Pat’s siblings, Msgr. Richard Mahowald of Sioux Falls, Jim (Kay) Mahowald of Watertown, Kay Walsh of Sioux Falls, Benita Coughlin of Sioux Falls and Steve (Lois) Mahowald of Omaha, NE; his brother-in-law, Reed Chester of Lakewood, CO, sisters-in-law Barb Desnoyers of Clark, SD and Kathy Nylander of Brooklyn Park, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Colette; and his sisters, Virginia Gordon, Ruth Abraham and Mary Dorothy Chester.

Memorials may be designated to the Immaculate Conception School Foundation or Arrow Education Foundation in Watertown.
