Obituary for Peter "Johnny" Tauer

Peter “Johnny” Tauer, age 66 of Watertown, SD passed away at his home Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

A private family graveside service was held on June 10, 2022 at the Veteran’s section at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Father Richard Fox will officiate.

Full military honors by the Patriot Guard Riders, the American Legion Post 17 and the Navy Funeral Honors Team.

Peter Francis Tauer was born on September 21, 1955 in Watertown, South Dakota to Peter and Marilyn Maxine (Keyes) Tauer. Johnny attended Immaculate Conception School from grades 1-8th, and the “old” Junior High 9th grade and then graduated from Watertown High School in 1974.

In 1978 he married Sue Adolph and two children, Chad and Lisa were born and later the couple divorced.

Johnny served in the US Army from 1974-1976 and then was a member of the SD National Guard for five years. He was put on active duty from July 1981-1984. He joined the US Navy in August 1985. Johnny was honorably discharged in 1989.

He was employed at Old Home Bakery for 17 years and was also a janitor in the Watertown School district and Lake Area Technical College. In addition, Johnny was employed at Daktronix in Brookings and Angus Palm in Watertown. He retired in 2017 for health reasons.

He loved family gatherings and at the last gathering, Johnny particularly enjoyed a very special dance with his two year old, grand-nephew, Oliver! He also loved long leisurely drives. Johnny enjoyed watching NASCAR races and the Minnesota Vikings football team. He loved his favorite family pets, Ruger and Bear and Connie’s dog, Abby.

Johnny is survived by his son, Chad Tauer of Sioux Falls, SD; his two sisters, Kim (Mark) Miller of Watertown and Mary (Elton) Fordyce of Sioux Falls, SD; his brother, Greg Tauer of MN; his niece, Mandy (Eric) Lentz of Watertown, SD; his nephews, Matt (Sarah) Miller of Watertown, SD and Mitch (fiancé, Sammy Bush) Miller of Watertown; her aunts and uncles, Jan Sharp of Watertown, SD, Dick Keyes of TX and Carol O'Neill of Henry, SD; and cousins; special friends, Rick Brownell and Connie Vandepol both of Watertown, SD; and his special, Aunt Karen Miller of Watertown.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; his daughter, Lisa; and two brothers, David and Richard.
