Obituary for Phyllis Solum

Phyllis M. Solum, 92, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.

Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Watertown with Father Michael Wensing as celebrant. Blaine Martian will be the song leader accompanied by Jane Jaspers.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown, SD.

Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Phyllis' grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Active Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Chris, Pat, Matt, Kyle, Brady and Brent Solum and Jesse Nygaard.

Phyllis Marie Solum was born to Henry and Anna (Maag) Wensing on October 14, 1926 in Watertown, SD. She attended the Esterly Country School and Florence High School, graduating in 1944. Prior to her marriage, she was employed at the First Citizens National Bank in Watertown.

On August 19, 1952 she married Burdette C. Solum. They lived in Brookings, SD for a short time while Burdette completed his BS degree. Following his graduation, the couple moved to Watertown where Phyllis was a homemaker all of her life, tasked with raising their five sons.

She was faithful to her Church and enjoyed family activities, sewing, especially making bridesmaid dresses, traveling, cooking and baking her excellent chocolate chip cookies.

Her memory will be cherished by her sons, Roger (Lisbeth), Greg, Bob (Janet), and Jon all of Watertown and Mike of Madison; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Dailey of Watertown; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Bludorn of Henry and Dorothy Wensing of Watertown; and her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burdette on December 28, 2012, her sister, Cheryl Jorgenson, and her brother, Jim Wensing.
