Obituary for Rex John Gerber Sr.

Rex J. Gerber, Sr., age 77, of Watertown, SD passed away Friday, November 25, 2022.

Visitation will be from 4-7pm, with a Time of Sharing starting at 7pm, Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown with military honors by the American Legion Codington County Post 17, Patriot Guard Riders and the SD Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team.

In lieu of flowers family requests memorials be designated to 727 DAV Charity Run and the DAV Hospital Transportation Network (Disabled American Veterans Hospital Transportation Network). This group helps provide transportation to Veterans unable to get to their VA appointments and this was very important to Rex. Thank you all.

Urnbearers will be Joe Gerber, Amanda Pritchard, Michael Byer, Elizabeth Byer, Kristen Esche and Pattrick Byer.


Rex John Gerber was born February 15, 1945 to Howard and Minnie (Miller) Gerber in Ortonville, Minnesota. He grew up in Wilmot, South Dakota and graduated in 1964. Rex was drafted into the United States Army where he served one year in Vietnam.

He married Betty Ledbetter on June 29, 1966 on the military base in Ft. Lenardwood, Missouri by the Army chaplain. The couple moved to Wilmot for a short time and then moved to Watertown, South Dakota.

Rex worked construction and JH Larson. He then bought the Mobile Bulk Plant in Watertown and owned and operated Scott’s Service Gas Station.

In 1979 the family moved to the farm until moving back to Watertown in 1994. Rex worked for Pollard International for a short time and did over the road truck driving for most of his years. Wilbur Ellis was his current job.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing and hunting.

Rex married Polly Hall on August 6, 2002 in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Grateful for having shared in Rex’s life are his wife, Polly of Watertown; his children, Kathy (Roger) Lefebvre of Watertown, SD, Steve Gerber of Sioux Falls, SD and Rex Gerber, Jr. of Watertown, SD; his step children, Carrie (Charley) Martinson of Gilbert, AZ and Tyler Hall of Watertown, SD; nephew, Ray (Stacey) Gerber Jr. of Watertown, SD; six grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; and his brother, Ray Gerber Sr.
