Obituary for Robert Joseph "Bob" Miller

"Bob" Robert Joseph Miller, age 90, of Castlewood, SD passed away Friday, April 28, 2023 at Avantara in Groton, SD.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am, with visitation one hour prior, on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, SD. Reverend Tom Christiansen will officiate with Roxanne Bass as the organist.

Interment will be at Castlewood Cemetery with Military Honors by the Castlewood Olson-Reid Post 250 American Legion and US Navy Honors Team.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to the American Church Building Fund.


Robert “Bob” Joseph Miller was born June 17, 1932 in Castlewood, South Dakota to Joseph and Gertrude (Olson) Miller. He was born the 7th child of a 7 child family with the others all girls.

Robert graduated from Castlewood High School in 1950, and then enlisted in the air branch of the Navy during the Korean War. Upon discharge he enrolled at South Dakota State University. He graduated and taught school for one year at Flandreau, SD. In 1958 Bob joined the Citizens State Bank in Castlewood. He was employed by 1st Federal Savings & Loan, Mill Mutual Insurance and Farmers & Merchants Bank of Watertown as branch manager at Garden City.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Carna Gantvoort July 13, 1952 at Castlewood and four children were born to the union, Melody, Robert, Keith and Gail. They lived in San Diego, Brookings and Flandreau and the balance of years were at Castlewood.

He was a member of the volunteer fire department in Castlewood, member of the Olson-Reid Post 250, American Legion in Castlewood, a city council member for two terms and served as city auditor, he was a member of American Lutheran Church where he served as treasurer and council member.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and gardening.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carna of Castlewood; his children, Melody (Galen) Swenson of Castlewood, Robert Jay Miller of Castlewood, Keith (Jeanine Nakakura) Miller of Aiea, HI, and Gail Nagelhout of Dell Rapids; his sister, Cloe Klatt of Pierre; his six grandchildren, Monte Kranz, Taylor Miller, Cole Miller, Maria Nagelhout, Adam Nagelhout and Dakota Miller; and one great-grandchild, Lennon Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Dorothy (Warren) Slubbendieck, Thelma (Cliff) Plowman, Margaret (Bill) Frantz, Marilyn (Orville) Withrow and Betty (Butz) Gardner; his brother-in-law, Bob Klatt; his parents-in-law, Bill & Olga Gantvoort; brothers and sister-in-law, Loren Gantvoort; Orvis & Marlene Gantvoort; and his grandson, Dustin Kranz.
