Obituary for Robert D. "Bob" Nygaard

Robert D. "Bob" Nygaard, age 76, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Watertown, SD passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Memorial service will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown, SD with visitation starting at 11:00 am prior to the service.

Robert D. Nygaard was born to Bert and Clara (Froslie) Nygaard on March 18, 1946 in Webster, SD. He was the baby of three children and his mother always said “Bob was the icing on the cake”. Bob grew up in Bradley, SD and Sioux Falls, SD, and went to school in Bradley until his sophomore year of high school when his family moved to Sioux Falls. He went from a class of 11 to a class of 1,100 at Sioux Falls Washington. He graduated from Washington Senior High School in 1964. Bob attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Education.

Bob married Karen Nelson in 1970. To this union daughter Rebecca Anne was born in 1971.

While Bob lived in Bradley he drove the creamery truck, grain trucks to the elevator and plowed fields with his sister, Dorothy. Bob worked at Sunshine Food while in high school. Also, during high school and college he worked part-time for Kreiser’s Medical Supply. Bob then worked with World Vision, Vista and Peace Corp. He worked at Bethesda Children’s Home in Beresford. His first full-time job he was referred by Bill Doughtery for a position with the State of South Dakota – Department of Transportation in Pierre and Webster. Many of his positions were with non-profits such as the Community Center in Fort Pierre, United Cerebral Palsy of Sioux Falls and Seattle, Watertown Career Learning Center and Heartland Community Action and Head Start in Minnesota.

Bob was a great basketball and baseball player. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. He also enjoyed NASCAR and Sprint Car Racing.

Bob enjoyed holiday celebrations with all the relatives’ cars lined up at the homes and playing games of all kinds on the farms. He hit a home run over Highway 20 while living at the Nygaard Farm east of Bradley, SD.
He had an infectious laugh and loved to make people smile. He tried to make sure that businesses were handicap accessible.

Bob accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Becky (Kevin) Johnson of Watertown, SD; his sister Dorothy (Dennis) Gibbs of Sioux Falls, SD; two nieces and a nephew and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Clara Nygaard; and his brother, Donald Nygaard.
