Obituary for Sherry Cordell

Sherry Lee Weinkauf Cleveland Cordell, age 76, of Watertown passed away Tuesday peacefully at Jenkins Living Center, May 2, 2023.

Funeral mass will be 10:30 am, Saturday, May 6, 2023, with visitation one hour prior, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Watertown. Father John Fischer will be the celebrant with Jane Rokusek as the organist.

Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Grob, Jamie Grob, Tim Emmons, Dustin Leiseth, Chris Cordell, and Matt Cordell


Sherry was born August 26, 1946 to Edgar and Tillie (Waltz) Weinkauf in Sisseton, South Dakota. She attended school in Sisseton, and graduated class of 1964.

Sherry married James Cleveland on September 5, 1964. James was drafted in the United States Army and was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968.

Sherry moved to Watertown, South Dakota where she attended Watertown Business University. She earned her Associates degree and went to work at St. Ann’s Hospital in Watertown as a medical secretary.

She met Howard Cordell in 1969 and they were married on May 22, 1971. They lived on an acreage east of Watertown where they raised their 3 children, Corey, Nikki, and Lisa. They were married for 33 years until Howard passed away on October 11, 2004.

She loved fishing, shopping, decorating, being outdoors, making homemade cards, animals, music and dancing. She especially enjoyed being with her 2 granddaughters Kira and Jaelynn.

Sherry was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and was a member of the Extension Club for 25 years. She worked for 13 years at Target until she retied at the age of 58.

Sherry is survived by her three children, Corey Cordell, Nicole “Nikki” Cordell Petersen (Aron Petersen) and Lisa Cordell, granddaughters Kira Cordell, and Jaelynn Jasperson. Her mother Tillie Weinkauf, brother Clinton Weinkauf, sister Sarah Weinkauf Grob (Pat Grob),

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Cleveland and Howard Cordell, her dad, Edgar Weinkauf and grandparents.
