Obituary for Sonja R. Welch
Sonja R. Welch, 79, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, following a brain injury. She was the widow of Charles "Charlie" Welch. Charlie Welch passed away on Friday, October 2, 2020.
Private family services for Charles and Sonja Welch will be on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Reverend Brian Stroh officiating.
Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.
Sonja was born on January 19, 1941 to John and Bessie (Fairbanks) Gillies in Watertown, SD. She spent her childhood in Kranzburg and later moved to Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School.
Sonja married Charles S. Welch on May 29, 1959, in Watertown, SD. Together they raised three children; Lisa, Billy and Cindy. She devoted her life to making a home and raising their children.
Sonja's greatest joys were her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their beloved pets.
She cherished the times spent together. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and crossword puzzles. Sonja looked forward to coffee with her friends at McDonald's every morning. Both she and Charlie were Minnesota Twins fans.
Sonja is survived by their children, Lisa Morford of Watertown, SD, Billy Welch of Rapid City, SD, Cindy (Rob) Zell of Sioux Falls, SD; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Les (Marlys) Gillies of Capistrano, CA.
She will be deeply missed by her loving family.
Sonja was preceded in death by Charles, her husband of 61 years, her parents, her stepfather, two brothers and one sister.
