Obituary for Viola Engels

Viola Engels, age 98, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Jenkins Living Center.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown with Pastor Scott Dempster officiating.

Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Pallbearers will be Jim Engels, Brian Engels, Jeff Hagen, Kerry Engels, Kevin Engels, Tyler Collins, Trevin Collins and Jeremy Urdahl.

Viola Engels, daughter of Hagen and Mary (Wilkins) Herding was born on June 18, 1924 in Rock Rapids,
Iowa. She grew up in the Watertown, SD area and attended school. On November 15, 1942 she married Theodore Engels, Jr. in Clear Lake, SD and they farmed on a farm near Watertown. Viola worked at several Watertown businesses including, Lincoln Hotel, Dakota Poultry Processing and the Elco Motel. Her beloved husband, Theodore Engels, Jr. passed away in 1987.

Viola loved farming, being a wife and a mother raising her children. She enjoyed gardening, baking and cooking, sewing, and children of all ages.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, James Engels, Donna Trautner (Allen) Bertsch, and Calvin (Patti) Engels of Watertown, SD, Janet (Ron) Collins of Revillo, SD, Chuck Engels, Marjorie (Scott) Schamens, Judy (Dave) Swanson, Darwin (Brenda) Engels, and Kelly Engels of Watertown, SD; 28 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hagen and Mary Herding; her husband, Theodore Engels, Jr.; her brothers, Hico and Bennie Herding; six sisters, Grace, Anna, Della, Margaret, Katie and Gladys; her son, Ronald Engels; her daughters, Betty Audus and Shirley Kinyon; two daughters-in-law, Vicky Engels and Alice Engels; sons-in-law, Lonnie Van Winsen, Terry Urdahl, Jim Trautner and Darwin Audus; two great grandsons, Michael Fetzer and Coy Hoeke; and one great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Urdahl.
