Virginia was born on June 27th, 1935 in Chamberlain, South Dakota to Henry and Julia (Mann) Balster. She grew up on her family farm near Kimball, South Dakota and graduated from Kimball High School in 1953. She earned a degree in Home Economics from South Dakota State University in 1957. Virginia married Clayton Carlson on September 9th, 1956. They made their home in Watertown, South Dakota. Virginia taught Home Economics at Waverly High School from the late 1950’s to early 1960’s. After her teaching career, she stayed home to raise her family.
Among the many things Virginia enjoyed were camping, and golfing. Both Clayton and Virginia were accomplished Ballroom and Square Dancers. To be a guest in her home for dinner or club showed off one of her real graces, to be a hostess, with no detail left unattended.
While working with her flowers she would never miss a chance to include her grandchildren showing them a bird, a bug, a caterpillar, or any of the beauty she always found in God’s creation.
From her hand recorded cards kept in a recipe box, to the margins of her bible and among the collected articles cut from the volumes she read was her testament to her faith in God and the necessity to make it part of her everyday life.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Promenaders Square Dance club, The Sons of Norway, several church groups, and various other teacher organizations. After retirement, Clayton and Virginia enjoyed traveling to visit friends and relatives in various parts of the country.
She always stayed active in the lives of her family, especially her grandchildren. Her gentle encouragement to appreciate the beautiful things in nature, music and the arts leaves a lasting legacy to her family.
During her last few years, she showed her family a quiet dignity through the struggles with her health.
Virginia is survived by her children Darwin (Kathy) Carlson and Jolene (Tom) Lieffort of Watertown, SD; her five grandchildren, Cecilia and Grant Carlson, Kari, Jim (Mollie) and Lexi Lieffort; her great-granddaughter Emery.
Proceeding her in death were her husband Clayton; her parents; her brothers Don and Eugene; her sisters Dorthea McGregor and Darlene Creamer; and her grandson Neil Carlson.
